This story has been updated to reflect the new numbers. <\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 1 million <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2021\/04\/13\/vaccinations-for-overseas-troops-in-jeopardy-as-dod-halts-johnson-johnson-covid-19-shots\/\" target=\"_blank\">COVID-19 vaccine shots<\/a> had been administered by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2021\/04\/27\/vaccine-refusals-not-being-tracked-because-demand-far-outstrips-supply-army-leaders-say\/\" target=\"_blank\">Army medical treatment facilities<\/a> at about 80 locations globally as of Tuesday, and roughly a third of those doses were given to soldiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of the 1 million inoculations, 436,533 recipients are fully vaccinated and 577,562 have received the first dose, the Army\u2019s Pentagon spokespeople said Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Approximately 358,512 soldiers have received their first vaccine and 278,336 are fully vaccinated, Army officials said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Almost half of active duty soldiers have received at least one dose and over one-third are fully vaccinated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rest of the vaccines administered at Army facilities are being given to families, civilians, contractors and eligible beneficiaries. Vaccination appointments are currently open to all eligible beneficiaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The demand for vaccines has been high, Army officials told reporters late last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEverybody needs more vaccines so they can vaccinate their soldiers,\u201d Army Medical Command boss Lt. Gen. R. Scott Dingle said April 27.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2021\/03\/24\/lawmakers-call-on-biden-to-make-covid-vaccines-mandatory-for-the-military\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6484817.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Lawmakers call on Biden to make COVID vaccines mandatory for the military<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">It remains unclear whether the White House or Pentagon is considering such a move.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHowever, we are just getting to that point, with the increased production of the vaccine, where we\u2019ll be able to meet that demand,\u201d Dingle added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even though <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2021\/03\/24\/lawmakers-call-on-biden-to-make-covid-vaccines-mandatory-for-the-military\/\" target=\"_blank\">some in Congress<\/a> have worried that the process is moving too slow and voiced support for making vaccinations mandatory for service members, they will remain optional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2021\/05\/03\/25th-service-member-dies-of-covid-19-as-white-house-considers-mandatory-vaccines\/\" target=\"_blank\">unless the White House intervenes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And although Army leaders have been lobbying aggressively to get troops comfortable with taking it, the service\u2019s vaccine program leaders say they\u2019re not concerned about refusals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUntil the supply exceeds our demand we\u2019re really not keeping that much track of it, because at this point the demand far outstrips supply,\u201d Brig. Gen. Matthew D. Smith, the Army\u2019s director of operations at the Pentagon, said April 27.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEvery time a soldier says \u2018Hey, I\u2019m not interested\u2019 \u2026 it basically becomes a next man up drill, next woman up drill, and we just get the shot in the arm of any soldier,\u201d Smith added. \u201cWe\u2019re doing that to the tune of about 95 percent
