The leaders took questions from Facebook, Twitter and Reddit\u2019s Army community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2021\/12\/27\/no-pme-no-problem-temporary-nco-promotions-return-january\/\" target=\"_blank\">temporarily promoting NCOs this year<\/a> regardless of whether they\u2019ve completed the required professional military education for the next rank. That\u2019s because the service struggled to adequately prioritize school slots and distribute them across career field, Sergeant Major of the Army Michael Grinston explained last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2021\/12\/27\/no-pme-no-problem-temporary-nco-promotions-return-january\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6306013.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">No PME, no problem \u2014 temporary NCO promotions return January<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Army will decide in September 2022 whether it will extend the temporary promotions into 2023.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the town hall, Grinston said that he\u2019s personally monitoring the situation in order to ensure the school backlog is easing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI look at this every month when we do an in-depth review on every MOS, every temporary promotion\u201d and schools attendance, the Army\u2019s top NCO said. \u201cOur ultimate goal is to get rid of the backlog by October of this year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The top NCO in the service\u2019s personnel directorate, Sgt. Maj. Mark Clark, said the early data is encouraging. He shared a snippet of the numbers for master sergeant temporary promotions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c[In January], we had 248 temporary promotions [without PME] out of about 450 promotions,\u201d Clark said. \u201cFast forward now to March \u2014 we\u2019re down to 74 [temporary promotions] that we\u2019re doing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sgt. Maj. Anthony McAdoo, the top enlisted soldier in Human Resources Command, said the move to buy time for schools to catch up on their waiting lists is showing progress. The waiting list for the Master Leader Course, which is required for promotion to master sergeant, has seen \u201cabout a 10% decrease from month-to-month since we started temporary promotions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The G-1 sergeant major added that the picture is less clear for lower NCO ranks because their PME schools are specific to their MOS, but that the overall trend is good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clark noted that one factor that made master sergeant promotions particularly challenging was a legislative change that allowed the Army to promote 600 more active duty E8s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Grinston, the temporary promotions will continue for all NCOs \u201cuntil we get rid of the [PME] backlog.\u201d And for some populations \u2014 pregnant and deployed soldiers in particular \u2014 the policy will stay, he confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When will senior NCO Order of Merit Lists release?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/army\/comments\/tb4qt2\/comment\/i04yycx\/?utm_source=share&#038;utm_medium=web2x&#038;context=3\" target=\"_blank\">commenter<\/a> on Reddit drew laughter and led Grinston to threaten the moderator with pushups when they asked a question about when order of merit lists will release for senior NCO promotions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new lists, which rank NCOs on merit rather than seniority, will provide the basic for PME selections and ultimately promotions once the Army catches up on the school backlog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know it\u2019s online, but I see the same basic question all the time,\u201d the Reddit user said. \u201cThis shows me two things: one, my peers are lazy, and two, it\u2019s not widely broadcasted from the powers that be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response, Clark said the service plans on the following \u201cpermanent release dates\u201d on an annual basis for the order of merit lists from senior NCO evaluation boards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Sergeant First Class: Jan. 20<\/li><li>Master Sergeant: July 20<\/li><li>Sergeant Major: Sept. 20<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those dates will only move if \u201csomething significant takes place,\u201d Clark
