{"id":16782,"date":"2018-01-24T20:45:40","date_gmt":"2018-01-24T20:45:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/01\/24\/the-army-needs-a-holster-for-its-new-handgun-and-this-company-is-standing-by-to-make-it\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:53:54","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:53:54","slug":"the-army-needs-a-holster-for-its-new-handgun-and-this-company-is-standing-by-to-make-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/off-duty\/2018\/01\/24\/the-army-needs-a-holster-for-its-new-handgun-and-this-company-is-standing-by-to-make-it\/","title":{"rendered":"The Army needs a holster for its new handgun \u2014 and this company is standing by to make it"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LAS VEGAS \u2013 The company that was picked to provide the holster for the Army\u2019s newest handgun is ready and waiting to make the next variation of the well-received holster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Safariland design team member told Army Times that they have materials and designs ready to accommodate pistol accessories such as a suppressor or rail-mounted light, when the Army selects what kind of add-ons it wants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In November, Army officials with the Program Executive Office Soldier told the press that the service had selected the Safariland holster company for its initial issue of the new Sig Sauer-built M17 9mm handgun, which replaced the 1980s-era Beretta M9 pistol last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Army officials said that they would also need a holster that could hold the pistol with one or both extras \u2013 a suppressor and some type of sighting system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service\u2019s fielding of the the new handgun is considered by some as a first step in re-focusing efforts to improve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/01\/23\/not-just-a-sidearm-armys-new-handgun-marks-first-step-to-changing-how-soldiers-fight\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\">close-quarters combat<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But until the Army decides what type and size of suppressor and which sighting system it will adopt, holster makers such as Safariland will have to wait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ARM-handgun-cover-4-web.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-37035\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ARM-handgun-cover-4-web.jpg.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ARM-handgun-cover-4-web.jpg.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ARM-handgun-cover-4-web.jpg.jpg?resize=768,512 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ARM-handgun-cover-4-web.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,683 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Army\u2019s new Modular Handgun System, or M17, will be issued to soldiers over the next 10 years. (Daniel Woolfolk\/Staff)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The handgun has an upper receiver that allows for mounting a top sight, though Maneuver Center of Excellence Lethality branch deputy Daryl Easlick said the Army had put more into development of a light\/laser combination that could be mounted on the underside rail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Army Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/off-duty\/gearscout\/shot-show\/2018\/01\/24\/this-laser-and-light-combo-could-find-its-way-onto-the-armys-new-handgun\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\">learned here <\/a>at the annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/off-duty\/gearscout\/shot-show\/\" data-original-title=\"\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\" style=\"\" aria-describedby=\"popover965107\">Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade show<\/a> that LaserMax Defense has sent prototypes to PEO Soldier for testing and is producing 100 of the devices to ship later this year for further evaluation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The holster now paired with the M17 handgun was well-received by soldiers and marksmanship instructors with the 101st Airborne Division when Army Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/01\/02\/watch-soldiers-shoot-the-armys-new-handgun-for-the-first-time\/\" data-original-title=\"\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\" aria-describedby=\"popover986236\">visited in December<\/a> to see pistol qualification by the first unit to receive the handgun.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The holster company that now provides the holster for the Army&#8217;s newest handgun is ready for round two of development.
