{"id":16958,"date":"2014-12-17T22:05:23","date_gmt":"2014-12-17T22:05:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2014\/12\/17\/it-s-official-units-credited-for-somalia-campaign\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T02:03:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T02:03:08","slug":"it-s-official-units-credited-for-somalia-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2014\/12\/17\/it-s-official-units-credited-for-somalia-campaign\/","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s official: Units credited for Somalia campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 200 units ranging in size from detachments to groups and brigades have been officially credited for participation in Operations Restore Hope and United Shield, the 2\u00bd-year relief and evacuation campaign in Somalia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span class=\"rte rte-comment\">General Orders<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span>Soldiers who were assigned to these units and who participated in the campaigns generally are <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"rte rte-comment\">2014-73 issued by Army Chief of Staff Gen. Raymond Odierno in November define the eligibility period for unit campaign credit as Dec. 5, 1992 through March 31, 1995.<\/span>eligible for the award of the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and the United Nations Medal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The campaign also generated several combat awards, including 103 Bronze Stars for Valor, 188 Purple Hearts, 41 Silver Stars, and posthumous Medals of Honor for Master Sgt. Gary Gordon and Sgt. 1st Class Randall Shugart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Units officially credited with participating in the Somalia campaign are at this link:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
