{"id":17198,"date":"2021-09-10T16:04:20","date_gmt":"2021-09-10T16:04:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2021\/09\/10\/breakthrough-could-allow-soldiers-to-charge-equipment-with-any-heat-source\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T02:01:10","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T02:01:10","slug":"breakthrough-could-allow-soldiers-to-charge-equipment-with-any-heat-source","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2021\/09\/10\/breakthrough-could-allow-soldiers-to-charge-equipment-with-any-heat-source\/","title":{"rendered":"Breakthrough could allow soldiers to charge equipment with any heat source"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scientists have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2021\/07\/28\/military-funded-research-looks-for-the-secret-gps-free-navigation-in-a-birds-eye\/\" target=\"_blank\">discovered <\/a>a new method of harnessing energy that could help future troops harvest power from heat sources, even at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/news\/404152\/turning-thermal-energy-into-electricity-could-help-soldiers\" target=\"_blank\">Army-funded<\/a> work by researchers at the University of Michigan resulted in a paper published recently in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-021-24587-7\" target=\"_blank\">Nature Communications<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This method \u201copens the door\u201d for new ways of gathering energy, first for military systems but eventually for all things electronic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe possibilities are endless,\u201d Dr. Pani Varanasi, Army Research Laboratory program manager, told Army Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2021\/04\/25\/army-wants-robots-sensors-to-make-infantry-platoons-10-times-better\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"185\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/soldiers-RCV.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Army wants robots, sensors to make infantry platoons 10 times better<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The future platoon will have a vast number of technogical advtanttages at its fingertips.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once fully developed, the method could provide a lightweight, portable, expeditionary energy converter at the \u201cpoint of need,\u201d day or night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A fire, engine heat, perhaps body heat one day, could all charge devices, providing power on-the-go without hauling tankers full of fuel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For some time, there has been a way to convert heat, or thermal energy, into electricity. It\u2019s known by the term \u201cfar-field thermophotovoltaics\u201d or FF-TPVs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If something in that very long word sounded familiar, it might be the \u201cphotovoltaic\u201d part. That\u2019s because that\u2019s essentially what solar panels are. They make electric current from sunlight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And while that technology is advancing, it can\u2019t make electricity at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s where the new process, known as \u201cnear-field thermophotovoltaics,\u201d comes in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The thermo part is also crucial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s because you can\u2019t store heat but you can story electric energy, like with a battery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat researchers have proven possible is bringing the heat source closer, grabbing more energy for more electricity, an order of magnitude more, while not destroying the receiver with too much heat,\u201d Dr. Pani Varanasi, Army Research Laboratory program manager, told Army Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey are creating a situation where we are able to explore new energy conversion technologies, reduce energy losses and are able to convert more heat into usable energy,\u201d Varanasi said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey\u2019re creating a situation where we\u2019re able to explore, reduce the losses, taking advantage of more heat,\u201d Varanasi said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much of this comes down to wavelengths. Light coming off surfaces has wavelengths that depend to some extent on the specific materials of the surface and their temperature. The interactions between materials and light also vary from one material to another, Varanasi said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis was achieved by fabricating thin-film TPV cells with ultra-flat surfaces, and with a metal back reflector,\u201d said Dr. Stephen Forrest, professor of electrical and computer engineering, University of Michigan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All of those terms may be new to you. But they\u2019re not new to science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was the method they used for these existing materials that made the difference, Varanasi said. The new combination allowed more heat to be absorbed, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This remains early-stage, laboratory research. Any fielding of this capability could be decades away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the theory of this method came into the field more than 60 years ago and took nearly the past 10
