The book on which it&#8217;s based, by Ben Fountain, tells the story of Lynn, a Silver Star recipient, as he&#8217;s honored during a super-sized NFL halftime ceremony in Dallas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"270\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bEG2uamc324?feature=oembed\" width=\"480\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The book was a finalist in the fiction category of the 2012 National Book Awards; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalbook.org\/nba2012_f_fountain.html#.VzTGXIQrKM8\">the award\u00a0citation<\/a> reads, in part: &#8220;Obscured by the agendas of others, the soldiers&#8217; reality is neither seen nor understood except through the powerful art of Fountain&#8217;s intricately orchestrated portrait.&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Billy-Lynns-Long-Halftime-Walk\/dp\/0060885610\">Amazon.com review<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"270\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Unn8fgs8fao?feature=oembed\" width=\"480\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The movie&#8217;s trailer, posted Thursday on Sony&#8217;s YouTube channel, lacks the satirical bent readers may have expected. The A.V. Club&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.avclub.com\/article\/if-theres-satire-its-missing-billy-lynns-long-half-236660\">trailer review<\/a> said the clip\u00a0&#8220;makes [the movie] look like a higher-budget version of one of those Christian-marketed films, all pomp and circumstance and serious as a heart attack.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tone may be a mystery, but outside of newcomer Joe Alwyn in the title role, the cast and crew are anything but:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Director Ang Lee (&#8220;Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon&#8221;), who said Fountain&#8217;s story &#8220;immediately gripped me,&#8221; per <a href=\"http:\/\/deadline.com\/2014\/09\/ang-lee-billy-lynns-long-halftime-walk-836456\/\">Deadline.com<\/a>.<\/li><li>Steve Martin as a fictionalized version of Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.<\/li><li>Kristen Stewart (&#8220;Twilight&#8221;) as Lynn&#8217;s older sister.<\/li><li>Chris Tucker (&#8220;The Fifth Element,&#8221; &#8220;Rush Hour&#8221;) as\u00a0a Hollywood producer trying to land the rights to a movie about Lynn&#8217;s unit.<\/li><li>Vin Diesel as one of Lynn&#8217;s battle buddies who weighs heavy on the main character&#8217;s conscience.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fountain <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalbook.org\/nba2012_f_fountain_interv.html#.VzTR8IQrKM8\">told author Mary Beth Keane<\/a>\u00a0that the idea for the novel came when he saw a Cowboys&#8217; halftime show in the mid-2000s and was &#8220;mightily impressed with the utter insanity of
