{"id":17550,"date":"2018-02-04T14:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-02-04T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/02\/04\/army-opens-three-more-posts-to-women-in-infantry-armor\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:55:46","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:55:46","slug":"army-opens-three-more-posts-to-women-in-infantry-armor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2018\/02\/04\/army-opens-three-more-posts-to-women-in-infantry-armor\/","title":{"rendered":"Army opens three more posts to women in infantry, armor"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the two years since the Army lifted its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2015\/12\/03\/combat-jobs-the-moss-now-opening-to-women-in-the-army\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">ban<\/a> on women serving in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/2015\/12\/03\/all-combat-jobs-open-to-women-in-the-military\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">infantry and armor jobs<\/a>, more than 150 have joined formations on two of the service\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2017\/05\/19\/18-women-graduate-from-the-army-s-first-gender-integrated-infantry-basic-training\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">largest installations<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, the Army is opening up three more posts for potential assignment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colorado, and the 1st Armored Division at Fort Bliss, Texas, an Army Forces Command spokesman confirmed to Army Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cForts Bliss, Campbell and Carson also are among the Army posts with large soldier-population densities,\u201d spokesman Paul Boyce said of the decision to expand to those locations. \u201cAs the integration plan continues, the potential number of assignment opportunities is among the factors to determine locations and timing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same decision-making went into choosing Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and Fort Hood, Texas, as the first installations to accept female infantry and armor soldiers. The posts are home to the 82nd Airborne Division and the 1st Cavalry Division, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2016\/12\/01\/13-women-graduate-from-the-army-s-first-integrated-armor-officer-course\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2571544.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">13 women graduate from the Army&#8217;s first integrated armor officer course<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Thirteen female officers are among the 68 to graduate from the Army&#039;s first integrated Armor Basic Officer Leader Course, the Maneuver Center of Excellence announced on Thursday.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since women began arriving in late 2017, the Army has expanded its number of fully integrated brigade combat teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those BCTs are 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division; the 1st Cavalry Division\u2019s 1st, 2nd and 3rd Brigade Combat Teams; and the 3rd Cavalry Regiment, which is also on Fort Hood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A total of 160 officers, noncommissioned officers and junior enlisted women are in these units, officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are female infantry and armor soldiers, in training now, with assignments to Fort Carson, Fort Campbell and Fort Bliss,\u201d Boyce said. \u201cThese soldiers will start arriving at the additional installations as soon as April 2018.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"4256\" height=\"2832\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ARM-OSUT-cover-7-1.jpg-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-37507\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ARM-OSUT-cover-7-1.jpg-1.jpg 4256w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ARM-OSUT-cover-7-1.jpg-1.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ARM-OSUT-cover-7-1.jpg-1.jpg?resize=768,511 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ARM-OSUT-cover-7-1.jpg-1.jpg?resize=1024,681 1024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ARM-OSUT-cover-7-1.jpg-1.jpg?resize=1536,1022 1536w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ARM-OSUT-cover-7-1.jpg-1.jpg?resize=2048,1363 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 4256px) 100vw, 4256px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Members of the Army&#8217;s first gender-integrated infantry one-station unit training class don their blue infantry cords for the first time. Albright)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The process of placing women in combat arms jobs at these locations will start with officers and NCOs before the junior enlisted arrive, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUsing a deliberate, phased approach, factoring in the number of leader volunteers to infantry or armor branches and the number of contracted accessions, Army senior leaders developed a plan that will nest integration plans with operational requirements to determine locations and timing,\u201d Boyce said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the ban on combat arms jobs was lifted, noncommissioned officers re-classed into the 11 series from around the Army, and the first class of female infantry officers graduated from training at Fort Benning, Georgia, in fall 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They were followed in spring 2017 by the first 18 women to complete infantry basic training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As more women spread into infantry jobs, six of them hit a major milestone in every ground pounder\u2019s career back in November, when they earned their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/01\/24\/six-women-become-the-first-to-earn-armys-expert-infantryman-badge\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Expert Infantrymen Badges <\/a>at Fort Bragg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The women were among 287 successful soldiers out of 1,007 who began the testing on Nov. 14, 82nd Airborne Division spokesman Lt. Col. Joe Buccino told Army Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWithin the crucible of ground combat, the most disciplined, the most practiced, the best trained will be successful,\u201d he said. \u201cThose basic warfighter skills are really what we test through the EIB program.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The EIB test includes 30 basic infantry skills and tasks that must be completed with fewer than three errors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those include weapons proficiency, movement under fire, response to chemical attacks, and treating injuries from overheating to open head wounds and broken bones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis historic achievement is a reminder of the great things we can achieve when women are seen and treated as equals and given the same chance to contribute to their country,\u201d Sen.
