{"id":17570,"date":"2022-04-01T23:18:46","date_gmt":"2022-04-01T23:18:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/04\/01\/army-suicides-hit-new-post-911-peak-in-2021\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:54:21","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:54:21","slug":"army-suicides-hit-new-post-911-peak-in-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2022\/04\/01\/army-suicides-hit-new-post-911-peak-in-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"Army suicides hit new post-9\/11 peak in 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>If you or a loved one is experiencing thoughts of self-harm or suicide, you can confidentially seek assistance via the Military\/Veterans Crisis Line at 800-273-8255, via text at 838255 or chat at&nbsp;<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/zV4ONCkiQH\"><i>http:\/\/VeteransCrisisLine.net<\/i><\/a><i>.<\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The active duty Army marked a grim milestone Friday as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dspo.mil\/Portals\/113\/Documents\/2021QSRs\/TAB%20A_20220317_OFR_Rpt_Q4%20CY21%20QSR.pdf?ver=PcN7dgtBKM3RG2uP1rAZ-A%3d%3d\" target=\"_blank\">Defense Suicide Prevention Office<\/a> report revealed that the service suffered more suicides in 2021 than any other year since the Sept. 11 attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 176 confirmed or pending suicide deaths for the service\u2019s active component present a worrying signal that the increase in suicides that began in 2020, which saw 174 suicides, has not abated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rate of suicide deaths among active duty troops also climbed to its highest level since the Great Depression \u2014 36.18 per 100,000 soldiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army Reserve saw a slight increase in suicide deaths, with 45 soldiers dying at a rate of 24.4 per 100,000. The Army National Guard lost 101 troops to suicide, for a rate of 29.92 per 100,000. Those rates are not historical highs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although suicide is extremely complex and unique to each victim, last year saw a number of events that could have had a psychological toll on troops, including the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Army officials across the country have been working to address the issue \u2014 the service launched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/252334\/army_implements_new_suicide_prevention_initiative\" target=\"_blank\">a new suicide prevention program<\/a> in late 2021 that has been trained down to the small unit level via the \u201cchain-teach\u201d method. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2022\/01\/10\/army-alaska-csm-asks-for-help-after-another-soldier-dies-at-home\/\" target=\"_blank\">Other leaders<\/a> have crowdsourced suggestions from their troops or promoted new handbooks for unit commanders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the program\u2019s implementation has gone slower than promised, and <a href=\"https:\/\/taskandpurpose.com\/news\/army-subreddit-resource\/\" target=\"_blank\">a Task &amp; Purpose report<\/a> highlighted potential issues with online suicide prevention resources that could impede troops in crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service first declared its intent to write a dedicated suicide prevention regulation in 2020, but that has so far not arrived. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/standto\/archive\/2021\/09\/03\/\" target=\"_blank\">September 2021 release<\/a> said it would publish that fall. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/252334\/army_implements_new_suicide_prevention_initiative\" target=\"_blank\">Nov. 2021 release<\/a> said it would come \u201cin the first quarter of 2022.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/armypubs.army.mil\/pdf\/administrative_pubStatus.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">status report<\/a> available on the Army Publications website says the 90-page draft regulation was due on March 22.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An Army spokesperson was unable to respond to a request for comment before this article\u2019s publication deadline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A near-record rate, but not a record number<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When calculated against the active duty Army\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2021\/10\/20\/army-hits-end-strength-goals-through-high-retention-lower-basic-training-attrition\/\" target=\"_blank\">end strength<\/a>, 2021\u2032s 36.18 suicide deaths per 100,000 soldiers is the highest rate of suicides since 1938, according to a 2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2757484\" target=\"_blank\">Journal of the American Medical Association analysis<\/a> of Army suicide rates over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the study\u2019s authors, University of Hawaii-Hilo professor Jeffrey Smith, told Army Times that while 2021\u2032s raw numbers \u201care not the highest annual total&#8230;[they are] obviously too many and tragic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smith pointed towards a year with a relatively low suicide rate \u2014 1918, when less than 15 soldiers per 100,000 died by suicide \u2014 as an example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAccording to a Surgeon General report, in 1918, 258 \u2018white enlisted\u2019 men alone were recorded as having taken their own life,\u201d explained the historian.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The active duty Army&#8217;s suicide rate is
