That inpatient number is up by almost one-third in the last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/10\/14\/active-coronavirus-cases-among-va-patients-increasing-in-october\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP_772059955918.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Active coronavirus cases among VA patients increasing in October<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">More than 66,000 VA patients have contracted the illness in the last seven months.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA leadership has repeatedly dismissed concerns about the rising number of active cases, insisting that the hospitalization rate among those patients remains at a low percentage of individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The increases in VA numbers come amid a nationwide rise in coronavirus cases. Last Friday, the total number of new cases of the illness reached nearly 70,000 as multiple states reported three-month highs in their case counts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At least 3,746 VA patients have died from issues related to coronavirus since mid-March, an average of more than 120 deaths per week. VA has reported 310 new deaths in October alone, although officials noted that some of those death reports may lag and could have occurred earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 5 percent of VA patients who contract coronavirus eventually die from complications related to the illness. That\u2019s significantly above the roughly 3 percent death rate among all Americans infected by the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/10\/20\/delay-in-release-of-annual-veterans-suicide-report-raises-concerns\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"149\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/BeThere.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Delay in release of annual veterans suicide report raises concerns<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The report is typically made public by now, but VA officials have no planned release date for this year.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, VA officials have discouraged comparing their patient population to the rest of the country, noting the increased dangers the virus presents to individuals who are elderly and infirm, two descriptors that encompass many of the department\u2019s patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the patient deaths, at least 58 VA employees have also died of complications related to the virus. Department medical staff have administered more than 820,000 virus tests since the start of the pandemic, with about 8.5 percent of all tests resulting in a confirmed diagnosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Department officials continue to encourage any veterans with a fever, cough, or shortness of breath to immediately contact their local VA facility for advice on the proper
