anti-submarine aircraft and combat ships conducted assault drills near Taiwan on Tuesday with the People\u2019s Liberation Army saying the exercise was necessary to safeguard China\u2019s sovereignty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China has stepped up military exercises around self-ruled Taiwan, which it considers its own territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recent U.S.-Taiwan provocations severely violated Chinese sovereignty, Eastern Theater Command spokesman Shi Yi said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The assault drills were held near Taiwan\u2019s southwestern and southeastern waters.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link Taiwan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Monday, after a Tweet after the fall of Kabul, the editor-in-chief of the Global Times, a Chinese state news agency, said the c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/afghanistan\/2021\/08\/16\/biden-no-amount-of-military-force-would-ever-deliver-a-stable-and-secure-afghanistan\/\" target=\"_blank\">haotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan <\/a>was an ill omen for Taiwan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAfter the fall of the Kabul regime, the Taiwan authorities must be trembling,\u201d Hu Xijin tweeted. \u201cDon\u2019t look forward to the US to protect them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Tuesday, Taiwan\u2019s premier <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-08-17\/taiwan-dismisses-questions-about-u-s-resolve-after-afghan-exit\" target=\"_blank\">defended the island\u2019s ability to withstand a Chinese attack even after the U.S. Afghan withdrawal,<\/a> according to Bloomberg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Premier Su Tseng-chang dismissed any suggestion that what happened in Afghanistan bodes ill for Taiwan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taiwan could avoid being \u201cswallowed up\u201d so long as it avoided similar domestic turmoil, Su said Tuesday, according to Bloomberg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe bloody lesson to be drawn from Afghanistan is that if you are in chaos internally, people from outside can\u2019t help you, even if they want to,\u201d he said, Bloomberg reported. \u201cOnly if you help yourself can others help you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last week, officers from the U.S. and Taiwanese coast guards met to discuss improving cooperation and communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The meeting followed the announcement of plans by the U.S. to sell 40 self-propelled howitzers to Taiwan in a deal valued at $750 million that drew strong condemnation from Beijing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. maintains only unofficial relations with Taiwan in deference to Beijing, but it is the island\u2019s key arms supplier and closest political ally.
