SAN DIEGO \u2014 A Navy SEAL who was acquitted of killing<\/a> a wounded Islamic State captive but convicted of posing with the corpse was sentenced by a military jury Wednesday to a reduction in rank and four months of confinement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A judge, however, credited Special Warfare Operator Chief Edward \u201cEddie\u201d Gallagher with enough time already spent in custody to ensure he won\u2019t be locked up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gallagher turned to his wife, shook his head and pretended to unpin his “anchors” \u2014 the insignia of a chief \u2014 and fling them across the courtroom. He then smiled and hugged her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sentence will not go into effect until it is approved by the rear admiral overseeing the court-martial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, Gallagher addressed the jury that had acquitted him Tuesday of murder, attempted murder and other counts stemming from an incident during a 2017 deployment to Iraq.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I put a black eye on the two communities that I love \u2014 the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Navy \u2014 specifically the SEAL community,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said he tried to lead by example but didn’t always succeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I’ve made mistakes throughout my 20-year career \u2014 tactical, ethical, moral \u2014 I’m not perfect but I’ve always bounced back from my mistakes. I’m ready to bounce back from this,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t
