Col. Stuart Scheller<\/a> has formally been charged with six violations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice and has been referred to a special court-martial, a Marine Corps spokesman said Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scheller rose to national fame Aug. 26 when he posted a video on LinkedIn and Facebook of himself, in his Marine Corps uniform, calling for senior leaders in the Department of Defense to be held accountable for their failures in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn the military there are proper forums to raise concerns with the chain of command,\u201d Capt. Sam Stephenson, a spokesman for Training and Education Command, said in a statement emailed to Marine Corps Times Wednesday. \u201cIn a general sense not specific to any case, posting to social media criticizing the chain of command is not the proper manner in which to raise concerns with the chain of command and may, depending upon the circumstances, constitute a violation of the Uniform Code of Military Justice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scheller has been charged with Article 88 (contempt toward officials), Article 89 (disrespect toward superior commissioned officers), Article 90 (willfully disobeying a superior commissioned officer), Article 92 (dereliction in the performance of duties), Article 92 (failure to obey order or regulation) and Article 133 (conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman), Stephenson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/10\/05\/marine-who-demanded-accountability-on-social-media-released-from-the-brig\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"220\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/KYAQJTBP5NHZZNNCZU32LSK3UA.jpeg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Marine who demanded \u2018accountability\u2019 on social media to be released from the brig<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Lt. Stuart Scheller was released from the brig Tuesday after striking a deal with the commanding general overseeing his case.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scheller\u2019s first video was posted after news broke that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/08\/27\/11-marines-killed-in-thursday-attack-in-afghanistan-marine-corps-confirms\/\" target=\"_blank\">13 service members, including 11 Marines, <\/a>had been killed in a suicide bombing at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/10\/01\/gunny-exhibits-small-unit-leadership-for-marines-returning-from-afghanistan\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hamid Karzai International Airport <\/a>in Kabul as thousands were fleeing the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He immediately was fired from his position as the battalion commander of Advanced Infantry Training Battalion at School of Infantry\u2013East at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the reprimand, the Marine went on to post several more videos and written statements to social media where he called for accountability from specific political and military leaders, including those in his chain of command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In one post Scheller said his goal was to \u201cbring the whole system down.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scheller was sent to the brig Sept. 27, but was released on Tuesday after his lawyers came to an agreement with the Marine Corps.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/opinion\/commentary\/2021\/10\/06\/the-corps-is-locking-up-truth-telling-marines-in-an-unjustly-reckless-system\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"162\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ohu_scheller.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The Corps is locking up truth-telling Marines in an unjustly reckless system<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">&quot;When anyone demands answerability of senior leaders, the institutions are quick to eliminate the threat of real transparency and accountability. Why is that?&quot;<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When news of the Marines brig time broke, several Republican members of Congress came to the lieutenant colonel\u2019s aid, writing a letter to Marine Corps Commandant Gen. David Berger demanding the Marine be released from the brig.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During his short stint in the brig, rumors circulated that Scheller was put in solitary confinement. Stephenson said those rumors were false.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhile Lt. Col. Scheller was in an individual cell, he was never held in solitary confinement,\u201d Stephenson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe was allowed recreational time for a minimum of two hours a day and could regularly converse with other prisoners and staff, albeit socially distanced and masked when in the company of others in accordance with COVID-19 protocols. As a policy, the brig does not put its prisoners in solitary confinement,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps would not comment on the deal made between Scheller\u2019s defense team and the Marine Corps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Journalist Carl Prine at <a href=\"https:\/\/coffeeordie.com\/scheller-deal-marines\/\" target=\"_blank\">Coffee or Die Magazine<\/a> reported that Scheller has agreed to plead guilty to some, but not all, of the charges brought against him in exchange for a release from the
