target=\"_blank\">Bradley <\/a>Fighting Vehicle drivers have faced forever \u2014 effectively seeing the terrain around them with the hatch closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/2018\/05\/29\/why-poland-wants-a-permanent-us-military-base-and-is-willing-to-pay-2-billion-for-it\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Bradley <\/a>can only be driven closed-hatch with the driver looking through mirrored sights and a limited field of view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So drivers are practically blind, compared with their pilot counterparts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But a 360-degree suite of situational awareness sensors and a prototype helmet developed for the Ground X-Vehicle Technologies program run by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency can pull in views from around the vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2018\/06\/28\/from-a-bradley-replacement-to-soldier-controlled-robot-swarms-big-moves-coming-with-army-robots\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" soldier-controlled robot swarms, big moves coming with Army robots<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Testing will help the Army decide how to integrate robots into small-unit formations and vehicles.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That sensor suite linked with the Mission Enabling Technologies-Demonstrator, or MET-D, allows the driver a fuller view of the battlefield, according to an Army release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The system uses an \u201carray of forward facing stereo camera pairs\u201d that collect images, which are then projected into the left and right eye of the user with holographic optical elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those elements and setup allow the driver to see depth, which eliminates nausea or eye strain present in systems that don\u2019t use that method.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The system also uses depth sensors and a combination of standard and fish-eye lens cameras to give the driver a view of the vehicle\u2019s perimeter and mid-range detection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe system allows us to compare 3-dimensional imagery controlled by advanced head tracker movements against multiple, conventional 2-dimensional vehicle mounted displays,\u201d said Troy Tava, MET-D project manager for the Army\u2019s Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The headset helps the driver interpret distances of objects it passes and is technology expected to be used in the development of the Next Generation Combat Vehicle, which is the scheduled Bradley replacement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While still under testing and an admittedly \u201cincremental\u201d step in building better vision for Bradley drivers, Tava said the development could be the \u2018x-factor\u2019 for fully operational closed hatch driving.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While still under development and
