Maj. Dan Helmer is actually in the Army, and 2. He knows it\u2019s bad, and it\u2019s on purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Helmer, 35, is a reserve intelligence officer who spent 11 years on active duty, with one deployment each in Iraq and Afghanistan, and he wants to be the Democratic congressman from Virginia\u2019s 10th District.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2018s an iconic scene, one in which we could have a little fun and be in on the joke ourselves,\u201d he told Army Times in a Tuesday phone interview. \u201cI\u2019m no fighter pilot and the last thing that anybody wants to do is fly on an airplane with me at the stick.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the jacket has an Army patch on it, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CDfhFfKSohc&amp;feature=share\">video<\/a> is meant to call out current 10th District Republican Rep. Barbara Comstock, whom Helmer sees in a bar and serenades her with a ditty about&nbsp;\u201closing that centrist feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have a representative right now who refuses to meet constituents and answer their questions in an open forum,\u201d Helmer said. \u201cIt\u2019s a serious issue but one in which we thought a little levity could go a long way toward highlighting it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"960\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/helmer1.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44788\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/helmer1.jpg.jpg 960w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/helmer1.jpg.jpg?resize=150,150 150w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/helmer1.jpg.jpg?resize=300,300 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/helmer1.jpg.jpg?resize=768,768 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Army Reserve Maj. He served with the 4th Infantry Division in Iraq in 2004, earned a master\u2019s degree at the University of Oxford on a Rhodes scholarship, deployed again with the&nbsp;1st Infantry Division in Afghanistan in 2007, then spent three years in South Korea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After moving back stateside, Helmer said, he decided to leave active duty for his family.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt the end of the day, the thing that made me move over to the reserves instead, is that I\u2019m married, I have two kids, my wife is a public school teacher,\u201d he said. \u201cI recognized the challenges of a military spouse and a dual-career family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So he went to work on government strategy &nbsp;for the Boston Consulting Group in 2014, keeping a position in the reserves. But the last presidential election inspired him to return to public service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was devastated at the state of our politics and shocked at the outcome of the election,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m the son of an immigrant, I\u2019m the grandson of [Holocaust] refugees, and my wife and I want the country that welcomed us here to still be here for our sons.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Helmer\u2019s website outlines 10 issue positions, from&nbsp;\u201csafety and security\u201d to&nbsp;\u201cwomen\u2019s health,\u201d&nbsp;\u201can inclusive society\u201d and&nbsp;\u201cconstitutional government.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn the military we put mission first and there\u2019s a real opportunity to carry mission first and the dedication to politics and our country that\u2019s been absent for many years,\u201d he said.&nbsp;\u201cWe have a sacred obligation to take care of those who have served. And as a congressman I will make sure that we honor that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 2018 election is more than a year off, though, so in the meantime he\u2019ll be talking to constituents and preparing a campaign platform that serves their needs, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And as a follow-up, Helmer\u2019s campaign released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Z1KxwmpdV3g\">second video<\/a> on Tuesday, asking for donations to encourage more campaigning and less singing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
