That SEAL, Petty Officer Anthony DeDolph and the other SEAL, who is still publicly unidentified, first told investigators that they found Staff Sgt. Logan Melgar at 5 a.m. on June 4 unresponsive in his room in embassy housing in Bamako, Mali.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It wasn\u2019t until after an autopsy revealed the cause of death that DeDolph and the other SEAL told investigators that the three roommates had been grappling, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2017\/11\/04\/navy-seal-under-investigation-in-death-of-green-beret-is-a-former-mixed-martial-arts-fighter\/\">Intercept<\/a> report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials with SOCOM, AFRICOM and NCIS have declined to comment on the ongoing investigation, which was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/10\/29\/us\/politics\/navy-seals-team-6-strangle-green-beret-mali.html\">originally reported by the New York Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DeDolph and his teammate said that Melgar passed out while they were wrestling, and they tried to resuscitate him before taking him to get medical attention, according to two unnamed military officials in the Intercept article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There have not been any charges filed in the case, which was initially investigated by Army Criminal Investigation Command and then turned over to NCIS on Sept. 24.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2017\/10\/30\/two-seals-under-investigation-in-green-berets-strangulation-death\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Staff-Sgt.-Logan-J.-Melgar.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">NCIS investigates two SEALs in Green Beret\u2019s strangulation death in Africa<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Two Navy SEALs are being investigated in connection to the strangulation death of an Army Green Beret in a house the three shared while on assignment in Mali.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DeDolph and the other SEAL were removed from their duties in Mali and placed on administrative leave during the investigation, according to the article. The SEALs were initially considered witnesses in the case but have since been termed \u201cpersons of interest\u201d by investigators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Melgar\u2019s wife, Michelle, was notified of his death shortly after the incident and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/10\/29\/politics\/navy-seal-team-6-mali\/index.html\">told reporters with CNN <\/a>that she had been told that it was being investigated as a homicide. She declined further comment to media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Melgar, 34, was a native of Lubbock, Texas, he joined the Army in 2012 and served two tours in Afghanistan with 3rd
