{"id":20535,"date":"2016-08-19T14:44:40","date_gmt":"2016-08-19T14:44:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2016\/08\/19\/army-units-change-patches-as-part-of-active-guard-and-reserve-pilot-program\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T02:10:05","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T02:10:05","slug":"army-units-change-patches-as-part-of-active-guard-and-reserve-pilot-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/management\/pay-benefits\/military-benefits\/2016\/08\/19\/army-units-change-patches-as-part-of-active-guard-and-reserve-pilot-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Army units change patches as part of active, Guard and Reserve pilot program"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Army\u2019s pilot program to bring together active-duty, Army Reserve and Army National Guard units is well underway as soldiers trade patches and form relationships across the components.<br\/><br\/> This week, soldiers from the Texas Army National Guard\u2019s <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/news\/207067\/texas-national-guard-patch-ceremony-initiate-army-one\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Link: null\">1st\u00a0Battalion, 143rd\u00a0Infantry Regiment<\/a> put on the patch of the 173rd\u00a0Airborne Brigade Combat Team, an active Army unit stationed in Vicenza, Italy, during a &#8220;patch-over&#8221; ceremony.<br\/><br\/> Earlier this month, soldiers from the 1245th\u00a0Transportation Company, Special Troops Battalion, 90th\u00a0Troop Command, put on the patch of the <a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.forthoodsentinel.com\/news\/oklahoma-national-guard-unit-dons-iconic-st-cavalry-division-patch\/article_57053242-6492-11e6-a565-17261e792ca1.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Link: http:\/\/www.forthoodsentinel.com\/news\/oklahoma-national-guard-unit-dons-iconic-st-cavalry-division-patch\/article_57053242-6492-11e6-a565-17261e792ca1.html\">1st\u00a0Cavalry Division<\/a>.<br\/><br\/> The ceremonies are just one part of the <a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/story\/military\/pentagon\/2016\/03\/22\/army-pilot-links-active-guard-and-reserve-units-training-deployments\/82128968\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Link: null\">Associated Units pilot<\/a>, which was announced in March.<br\/><br\/> The pilot establishes formal relationships between designated units so they can train and potentially deploy together.<br\/><br\/> &#8220;Much of America\u2019s Army\u2019s capacity is resident in the reserve components, and we must rely more heavily on them to meet the demands of a complex global environment,&#8221; Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Milley said in a statement announcing the pilot. &#8220;The Associated Units pilot allows us to leverage the capabilities and capacities of the active component, Army Reserve and Army National Guard as one Army.&#8221;<br\/><br\/> The goal of these partnerships is to establish relationships between the units prior to mobilization, Troy Rolan, an Army spokesman, said at the time.<br\/><br\/> &#8220;[This] requires training together as much as possible, both at home station and at combat training centers,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The units will wear common patches and will exchange personnel to enhance the integration.&#8221;<br\/><br\/> It also will mean more training opportunities for Guard and Reserve units involved in the pilot.<br\/><br\/> &#8220;This is going to be a great demonstration of how the total Army fights,&#8221; said Col. Gregory Anderson, commander of the 173rd Airborne Brigade, according to information released by the Texas Military Department. &#8220;Most ceremonies mark either recognition of achievement or a transition. This particular ceremony, for them to don the 173rd\u00a0patch, is symbolic of their relationship to us and our responsibility to them.&#8221;<br\/><br\/><img decoding=\"async\" data-alignment=\"center\" data-object-id=\"00000156-9f0f-ddc2-ad76-bfdf9a1f0000\" data-type=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/snagfilms-a.akamaihd.net\/57\/21\/1b1e495c4a16a13df9a63f2c1394\/texas-patch.jpg\"\/><figcaption> <span>soldiers from the 1245th Transportation Company put on the 1st Cavalry Division patch during a ceremony Aug. 7. Garett Hernandez\/Army<\/span><\/figcaption><br\/> Leaders of the 1245th\u00a0Transportation Company, a medium truck company that is part of the Oklahoma Guard, shared similar sentiments, according to a 1st\u00a0Cavalry Division news story.<br\/><br\/> &#8220;This gives us a unique training opportunity,&#8221; said Capt. Aaron Knott, the company commander.<br\/><br\/> It also gives the unit six additional drill days and 21 extra annual training days to train with the 1st\u00a0Cavalry Division Sustainment Brigade.<br\/><br\/>The Associated Units pilot program is part of Milley\u2019s push to emphasize the importance of all three Army components.<br\/><br\/> In January, he said the Army is working to rely more heavily on the Guard and Reserve and was looking for ways to increase partnerships between the components and add more combat training center rotations for Guard brigades. The U.S. cannot go to war without the Guard or Reserve, Milley said at the time.<br\/><br\/> &#8220;War consumes a lot of assets \u2026 and you just can\u2019t get there without the strategic depth that\u2019s necessary and provided by the Guard and Reserve,&#8221; he said. &#8220;War is a national challenges, and, for our part, we cannot execute without the Guard and the Reserve.&#8221;<br\/><br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Associated Units pilot began in June and plans call for the Army to test the concept for three years before transferring to full implementation in 2019, according to information from Army officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other Army units that have been paired together include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Task Force 1-28 Infantry, an infantry battalion at Fort Benning, Georgia, and the Georgia Guard\u2019s 48th\u00a0Infantry Brigade Combat Team.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>1st\u00a0Battalion, 151st\u00a0Infantry Regiment from the Indiana Guard and 2nd\u00a0BCT, 25th\u00a0Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The Army Reserve\u2019s 100th\u00a0Battalion, 442nd\u00a0Infantry Regiment in Hawaii and 3rd\u00a0BCT, 25th\u00a0Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The 81st\u00a0Armored Brigade Combat Team from the Washington Guard and the 7th\u00a0Infantry Division at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>3rd BCT, 10th\u00a0Mountain Division at Fort Polk, Louisiana, and the Texas Guard\u2019s 36th\u00a0Infantry Division.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The 86th\u00a0Infantry Brigade Combat Team from the Vermont Guard and the 10th\u00a0Mountain Division at Fort Drum, New York.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The Reserve\u2019s 824th\u00a0Quartermaster Company in North Carolina and the 82nd\u00a0Sustainment Brigade at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The 840th\u00a0Engineer Company from the Texas Guard and the 36th\u00a0Engineer Brigade at Fort Hood.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The 1176th\u00a0Transportation Company from the Tennessee Guard and the 2123rd\u00a0Transportation Company from the Kentucky Guard and the 101st\u00a0Sustainment Brigade at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The 5th\u00a0Engineer Battalion at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and the 35th\u00a0Engineer Brigade from the Missouri
