(AP) \u2014 The U.S. Army says it is making progress in the long-running effort to address groundwater contamination at part of Fort Detrick that was used as a test site for the Army\u2019s biological warfare program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army has been studying the groundwater problems on and around the \u201cArea B\u201d portion of the Maryland base for over a decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joseph Gortva, chief of Fort Detrick\u2019s Environmental Management Division, recently told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fredericknewspost.com\/news\/environment\/army-cautiously-optimistic-it-will-move-to-new-phase-of-area-b-cleanup-in-3\/article_8a748fdb-ce39-535f-8c87-87f2e91142d1.html\">Frederick News-Post<\/a> he is \u201ccautiously optimistic\u201d the Army will complete field work at the site within the next two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It will likely take another year or two beyond that for officials to finish a report summarizing what they\u2019ve learned, the newspaper reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then the Army would move to the \u201cfeasibility study\u201d phase of the cleanup. That would involve evaluating potential methods of addressing the contamination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cleanup process for the site\u2019s groundwater has been in the \u201cremedial investigation\u201d phase since 2010, the newspaper reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has designated the Area B groundwater as a Superfund site. Most drinking water wells near Fort Detrick have been closed, according to the newspaper.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The cleanup process for the site\u2019s groundwater has
