{"id":21167,"date":"2018-03-27T16:27:40","date_gmt":"2018-03-27T16:27:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/03\/27\/darpa-to-use-artificial-intelligence-to-help-commanders-in-gray-zone-conflicts\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T02:18:15","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T02:18:15","slug":"darpa-to-use-artificial-intelligence-to-help-commanders-in-gray-zone-conflicts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2018\/03\/27\/darpa-to-use-artificial-intelligence-to-help-commanders-in-gray-zone-conflicts\/","title":{"rendered":"DARPA to use artificial intelligence to help commanders in \u2018gray zone\u2019 conflicts"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Across the military branches, commanders are looking at how artificial intelligence can be used to fly better aerial routes, insert robotic vehicles into formations and process vast amounts of data in the information-dense battlefields of the near future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/02\/28\/from-dolphins-to-plankton-darpa-program-turns-creatures-into-sensors\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency<\/a> recently started a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/01\/08\/drone-swarm-tactics-get-tryout-for-infantry-to-use-in-urban-battlespace\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">program <\/a>that looks to use that same technology and other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2018\/01\/22\/military-project-aims-to-combat-disease-outbreaks-protect-warfighters\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">tools <\/a>to get inside the enemy\u2019s head, learning their intent in the nebulous \u201cgray zone\u201d of conflict that marks modern warfare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gray zone conflicts are those in which state and non-state competition becomes conflict but remains below the level of conventional warfare. Experts have pointed to Russia\u2019s use of hybrid threats in Ukraine and other areas, along with China\u2019s aggression in the South China Sea as examples.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2018\/01\/02\/dod-wants-your-ideas-on-how-to-operate-navigate-underground\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/caverescue.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">DoD wants your ideas on how to operate, navigate underground<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Rising populations, denser urban areas and existing security threats are forcing military and civilian emergency workers underground.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new program, Collection and Monitoring via Planning for Active Situational Scenarios, or COMPASS, aims to develop software that would gauge an adversary\u2019s response to stimuli and then discern that adversary\u2019s intentions and give commanders intel on how to respond, according to a DARPA release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs we see increasingly more sophistication in gray-zone activity around the world, we need to leverage advanced AI and other technologies to help commanders make more effective decisions to thwart an enemy\u2019s complex, multi-layered disruptive activity,\u201d said Fotis Barlos, DARPA program manager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think fast-paced intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance in the signals sphere, with virtual probing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re looking at the problem from two perspectives: Trying to determine what the adversary is trying to do, his intent; and once we understand that or have a better understanding of it, then identify how he\u2019s going to carry out his plans \u2014 what the timing will be, and what actors will be used,\u201d Barlos said. \u201cThe first is the what, and second is the where, when, and how.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This program, Barlos said in the DARPA release, isn\u2019t geared toward developing new sensors, virtual reality or hardware. It is all about advanced software that will serve up options to commanders by \u201cassimilating a large amount of intelligence collected using existing, state-of-the-art systems.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe ultimate goal of the program is to provide theater-level operations and planning staffs with robust analytics and decision-support tools that reduce ambiguity of adversarial actors and their objectives,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The COMPASS program is seeking experts in AI, machine learning, game theory, modeling and simulation, control systems and other related fields, according to the release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.darpa.mil\/news-events\/2018-03-14\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cProposers Day\u201d<\/a> scheduled for Friday, March 30 in Arlington, Virginia.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Defense Advanced
