{"id":21335,"date":"2015-02-23T19:31:14","date_gmt":"2015-02-23T19:31:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2015\/02\/23\/nco-officer-broadening-seminars-available-for-this-summer\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T02:17:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T02:17:08","slug":"nco-officer-broadening-seminars-available-for-this-summer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2015\/02\/23\/nco-officer-broadening-seminars-available-for-this-summer\/","title":{"rendered":"NCO, officer broadening seminars available for this summer"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several seminars with strategic security themes are included in a new menu of broadening opportunities for officers, warrant officers and senior noncommissioned officers of the Regular Army and Army Reserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The seminars, which also are available to Army civilians, range from three to five weeks in length. They <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">, and <\/span>will take place <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">be conducted <\/span>later this year at nine civilian and military academic institutions in the United States, Great Britain and Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An initiative of Army Chief of Staff Gen. Raymond Odierno, the seminars are designed to prepare soldiers and civilians for future leadership roles with Army, joint, interagency and multinational task forces and teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As students, selectees will interact with world-class academics, senior Army leaders, international and interagency partners and business executives in team-based, small groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The academic workload will culminate with a capstone project for presentation to a senior Army leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soldiers do not incur an active-duty service obligation for participating in this program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To qualify<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> for participation<\/span>, applicants of the Regular Army, Active Guard and Reserve (Army Reserve) Troop Program Unit, Individual Mobilization Augmentee program or Individual Ready Army Reserve must be in the grades of captain (year groups 2007-2010) and major; chief warrant two through four; sergeant first class through sergeant major, or GS-11 to GS-14.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soldiers should apply for the program no later than April 3 using a DA Form 4187 (personnel action request) submitted to the Human Resources Command using procedures described in MilPer Message 15-042, dated Feb. 11.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Civilians should apply through their career program manager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">following <\/span>institutions are participating in the 2015 Army Headquarters Strategic Broadening Seminar Program:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b><span>Defense Academy of the United Kingdom, Shrivenham, England, Intermediate Command and Staff Course:<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Provides promotable captains and junior majors with an opportunity to study at the master&#8217;s level and enhance their strategic thinking. Instructors will include a mix of military staff and academics from King&#8217;s College London and Cranfield University. Two seminars are slated for June 21-Aug. 1 and Sept. 20-Oct. 31.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b><span>University of North Carolina and the Institute for Defense and Business Strategic Studies Fellows Program, Chapel Hill, North Carolina.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span>Provides senior NCOs, chief warrant officers, captains and majors with an immersion in national security issues through non-military and business lenses. Students earn three graduate-level credit hours from Indiana University&#8217;s Kelly School of Business. One seminar is scheduled for May 31-June 27. For more information, access <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unc-idbfellows.org\"><span>www.unc-idbfellows.org<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b><span>Indiana University and the Institute for Defense and Business Strategic Studies Fellows Program, Bloomington, Indiana.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span>Provides senior NCOs, chief warrant officers, captains and majors with a three-week learning experience in national security concepts from an international relations, foreign policy and business perspective. One seminar is scheduled for Aug. 2-22. For additional information, access <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iu-idbfellows.org\"><span>www.iu-idbfellows.org<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b><span>University of Foreign Military and Cultural Studies, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, Critical Thinking and Group Mitigation Course (Red Team).<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span>Provides senior NCOs, promotable CW3s and captains and majors with a tailored approach to enhanced decision making. Other students will include cohorts from brigade combat teams and organizations who are seeking to improve decision-making and awareness.Two five-week seminars are scheduled for May 25-June 26, and Aug. 24 to Sept. 25. The seminar is scheduled for June 28-July 17. The four-week seminar includes instruction by Army War College faculty, guest speakers, strategic staff rides and a capstone strategic issue project.
