{"id":21384,"date":"2017-09-26T19:01:16","date_gmt":"2017-09-26T19:01:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2017\/09\/26\/new-uniform-coating-could-keep-troops-warm-without-multiple-layers\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T02:19:24","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T02:19:24","slug":"new-uniform-coating-could-keep-troops-warm-without-multiple-layers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/2017\/09\/26\/new-uniform-coating-could-keep-troops-warm-without-multiple-layers\/","title":{"rendered":"New uniform coating could keep troops warm without multiple layers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers are working on a way for soldiers to generate heat in cold environments instead of piling on multiple bulky layers to their uniforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By applying a silver nanowire coating to the uniforms, troops could theoretically dial up the heat to keep themselves comfortable, according to researchers at U.S. Army Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center in Massachusetts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The silver nanowires form an electrically conductive network that when hooked up to a low-power battery can heat up polyester and polypropylene, research bioengineer Paola D\u2019Angelo told Army Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is to coat gloves with the material and eventually apply it to the entire uniform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf we reduce the number of layers [troops have to wear], they still keep that dexterity that allows them to operate weapons and machinery,\u201d D\u2019Angelo said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Right now, D\u2019Angelo and her team have been coating a swatch of material that\u2019s a couple of inches square. They dip the material in the silver nanowire coating for about 45 minutes to an hour, then it\u2019s exposed to a temperature of 150 degrees Celsius for about 30 minutes to fuse the nanowires together. This improves the electrical conductance, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"733\" height=\"550\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/coldweather-nanowire-filament.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-45406\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/coldweather-nanowire-filament.jpg.jpg 733w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/coldweather-nanowire-filament.jpg.jpg?resize=300,225 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 733px) 100vw, 733px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Silver nanowires form an electrically conductive network that when hooked up to a low-power battery can heat up polyester and polypropylene, Army researchers say.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The swatch is hooked up to a power supply and passing between .5 to 3 volts \u2014 similar to that of a watch battery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">D\u2019Angelo said they\u2019re going to collaborate with a professor from the University of California-San Diego who developed a flexible battery that would work better with the silver nanowire coating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This battery is about as thick as a piece of tape and weighs almost nothing, which is important, she said. It will go either in the cuff of the glove or on top of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou can flex it and bend it and stretch it and it still performs the same,\u201d D\u2019Angelo said. \u201cWe obviously want to try to avoid using battery packs because we don\u2019t want to add any weight to the soldier.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project is still in the basic research stage, and D\u2019Angelo said it will be several years before troops will receive silver nanowire-coated items.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf everything goes as expected, we\u2019ll probably move on to socks to prevent frostbite,\u201d she said. \u201cIf that goes well, we\u2019d go to the base layer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elizabeth Hirst, a research chemist at Natick, is working on a moisture-absorbing hydrogel to complement D\u2019Angelo\u2019s coating work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe idea with the hydrogel is adding a coating or particle coating that helps increase the wicking ability of the fabric at very cold temperatures,\u201d Hirst said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although polyurethane is already moisture wicking, Hirst said the problem is if any moisture turns to ice before it has a chance to evaporate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen you get ice spots around the wrists, neck, anywhere you\u2019re really sweating heavily,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The absorbent hydrogel coating would prevent that from happening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There has been a lot of research on hydrogels at warmer temperatures, Hirst said, but not much is known about what happens to them at cold temperatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1066\" height=\"729\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/coldweather-nanowire-chart.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-45410\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/coldweather-nanowire-chart.jpg.jpg 1066w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/coldweather-nanowire-chart.jpg.jpg?resize=300,205 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/coldweather-nanowire-chart.jpg.jpg?resize=768,525 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/coldweather-nanowire-chart.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,700 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1066px) 100vw, 1066px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Army researchers are working on a hydrogel that helps increase the wicking ability of uniform fabric at very cold temperatures. This effort complements the development of a silver nanowire coating.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hirst\u2019s team has confirmed that hydrogels will still absorb moisture even if the gel freezes, and the next step is to test it on swatches of material, like D\u2019Angelo\u2019s team did with the silver nanowire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the next steps is to research how well the coating holds up to being washed, and if there are any potential risks to the soldier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They want to make sure they can protect the battery from moisture, as well as keeping the system from heating up too much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne nice thing is even if the battery fails,\u201d Hirst said, \u201cthe nanowires themselves are very good infrared reflectors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The coating will bounce back your own body heat, so the nanowires can provide some heat even without a battery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">D\u2019Angelo said the team wants soldiers to be able to dial the heat up or down depending on the environment and their needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMaybe a 10-15 degree difference would benefit the soldier and would make it comfortable for them in such a way that they don\u2019t have to wear as many layers,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is to increase soldier performance and readiness, D\u2019Angelo said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt will take a little bit more research to get up there,\u201d she said. \u201cBut we\u2019re hopeful this will improve the cold-weather
