Taylor Knueven always knew<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2020\/04\/30\/a-culture-that-fosters-sexual-assaults-and-sexual-harassment-persists-despite-prevention-efforts-a-new-pentagon-study-shows\/\" target=_blank> sexual assault and harassment <\/a>plagued the U.S. Army. But the combat medic\u2019s own assault early last year opened her eyes to the broken system surrounding one of the military\u2019s most infamous problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this week, Knueven and six other soldiers went before a panel in the 18th Airborne Corps headquarters at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, to present ideas on how the Army can revamp the way it deals with sexual assault and harassment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army\u2019s Sexual Harassment\/Assault Response and Prevention Program, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2021\/02\/26\/the-pentagons-sexual-assault-review-committee-wants-troop-input-on-policy-and-culture-change\/\" target=_blank>also known as SHARP<\/a>, has been the subject of much scrutiny, especially following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2020\/07\/02\/missing-fort-hood-soldier-was-killed-in-armory-then-hacked-to-pieces-familys-attorney-says\/\" target=_blank>the slaying of Spc. Vanessa Guillen<\/a> by a fellow soldier inside a Fort Hood, Texas, armory last April.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2021\/02\/26\/the-pentagons-sexual-assault-review-committee-wants-troop-input-on-policy-and-culture-change\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/47515486581_ea91568fe6_k.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The Pentagon\u2019s sexual assault review committee wants troop input on policy and culture change<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Defense Department&#039;s 90-day review of its sexual assault response program is getting underway.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The proposal Knueven presented to the panel Monday would address gender and military bias by reworking the composition of offender separation boards. She said her attacker went before a board consisting of three men and no women. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knueven described in detail events on the night she says she was assaulted by a fellow soldier at a concert. And she recounted how she felt about reporting the incident and what went through her mind when she said she learned he would remain in the Army and ultimately face little punishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI thought it was a total slap in the face to myself,\u201d Knueven said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last week, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said at his first Pentagon news conference that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2021\/01\/24\/in-one-of-first-actions-new-secdef-orders-review-of-sexual-misconduct-programs\/\" target=_blank>reducing sexual assault is one of his top priorities<\/a> and that he would introduce stronger efforts to fight it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have been working at this for a long time in earnest, but we haven\u2019t gotten it right,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Staff Sgt. Shameka Dudley wants to see stale SHARP training PowerPoints replaced with virtual reality scenarios that would offer soldiers a glimpse at assault and harassment scenarios through the eyes of survivors, aggressors and bystanders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have this same training and it\u2019s really not changing much,\u201d Dudley said. \u201cThe numbers are still going up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 28-year-old mother of five handed out virtual reality glasses to the panel as she recounted the success she\u2019s seen the method play in the treatment of veterans struggling with post traumatic stress disorder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For her, it\u2019s about understanding and empathy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe majority of people learn from doing, from seeing, from being able to be there,\u201d Dudley said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/02\/24\/plan-to-remove-handling-of-military-sexual-misconduct-from-chain-of-command-sees-new-momentum\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/JAG2-RESIZED.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Plan to remove handling of military sexual misconduct from chain of command sees new momentum<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Pentagon officials have objected to the idea for years, but the new Senate Armed Services Committee chairman says the proposal is back on the table.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dudley says soldiers who have experienced sexual trauma can opt out of the training as it may serve as a trigger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The presentations were made as a part of the 18th Airborne Corp\u2019s \u201cDragon\u2019s Lair\u201d series, a \u201cShark Tank\u201d like competition that sources innovative ideas from within the Army\u2019s ranks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is an amazing effort to connect our best and brightest directly to senior leaders who are ready to take action. It just feels different this time,\u201d Lt. Col. Scott Stephens, who presented to the panel, tweeted Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps says parts of all seven presentations will be implemented across the Army. Some ideas, like Knueven\u2019s will be easier than others and involve simple policy changes, according to Col. Joe Buccino, Public Affairs Officer for the 18th Airborne Corps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps has already begun conversations with a film producer to bring Dudley\u2019s idea to life, according to Buccino.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am confident, very confident, we will implement all ideas,\u201d he told The Associated Press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knueven hopes that\u2019s the case.
