{"id":21893,"date":"2015-11-10T03:38:29","date_gmt":"2015-11-10T03:38:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2015\/11\/10\/uber-and-lyft-to-offer-free-rides-to-veterans-for-job-interviews\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T05:40:51","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T05:40:51","slug":"uber-and-lyft-to-offer-free-rides-to-veterans-for-job-interviews","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/education-transition\/2015\/11\/10\/uber-and-lyft-to-offer-free-rides-to-veterans-for-job-interviews\/","title":{"rendered":"Uber and Lyft to offer free rides to veterans for job interviews"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ride-sharing services Uber and Lyft will donate tens of thousands of free trips to veterans for transportation to work, job interviews and other critical needs, officials announced Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move is part of a broader effort by the White House&#8217;s Joining Forces initiative to help end homelessness among veterans, and encourage corporate partners to fill the unmet needs of America&#8217;s military families.\u00a0Initiative officials made the announcement on behalf of the\u00a0two companies on the eve\u00a0of Veterans Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ride-sharing services\u00a0offer on-demand transportation services in metropolitan areas across the country, allowing people to use their phones to request and pay for cab service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We have heard time and time again that transportation to and from work and job interviews is often a significant hurdle for homeless veterans trying to find work,&#8221; Air Force Col. Nicole Malachowski, Joining Forces executive director,\u00a0wrote in a statement hailing the announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;If a veteran is working a night shift or employed in a remote area of a city, public transportation is not always a viable option, and there is limited funding available for alternative transportation.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Company officials said the rides will be made available in coming months, through veterans organizations working with the Labor\u00a0Department&#8217;s Homeless Veterans&#8217; Reintegration Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, Uber officials announced plans to allow customers to donate $5 toward\u00a0additional rides for veterans on Veterans Day, through the company&#8217;s apps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most recent estimates put the number of homeless veterans in America at just under 50,000 people. The National Coalition for Homeless Veterans estimates that more than two-thirds of those veterans live without access to reliable transportation, limiting their ability to gain and hold jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More information on the free rides will be available on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dol.gov\/vets\/programs\/hvrp\/\"><u>Department of Labor website<\/u><\/a>, and on the <a
