{"id":24572,"date":"2020-11-02T20:42:32","date_gmt":"2020-11-02T20:42:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/11\/02\/wearable-tech-transforms-10th-mountain-troops-into-soldier-athletes\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T02:21:49","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T02:21:49","slug":"wearable-tech-transforms-10th-mountain-troops-into-soldier-athletes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2020\/11\/02\/wearable-tech-transforms-10th-mountain-troops-into-soldier-athletes\/","title":{"rendered":"Wearable tech transforms 10th Mountain troops into soldier-athletes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army is matching up smartwatches, rings and data collection to help turn soldiers into measured <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/04\/11\/this-mattis-directed-task-force-wants-to-overhaul-the-infantry-heres-how-it-might-do-that\/\" target=_blank>athletes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 530 soldiers from 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, have been issued wearable technology at the start of a yearlong <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/10\/25\/new-army-research-institute-will-focus-on-soldier-and-squad-performance\/\" target=_blank>human performance study<\/a>, according to an Army <a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/240380\/sensored_for_success_fort_drum_soldiers_participate_in_performance_optimization_research\" target=_blank>statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The program, whose pilot Army Times first reported on in 2018, is called MASTR-E, or Measuring and Advancing Soldier Tactical Readiness and Effectiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 10th Mountain soldiers ran through a 200-meter stress shoot recently, testing their speed, decision-making and accuracy under pressure. And that was just for training. Soldiers are not required but can wear the device off duty to track their exercise, sleep and other activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2018\/06\/14\/these-paratroopers-strap-on-sensors-during-field-ops-to-help-scientists-measure-performance\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/82nd-sensors-MASTR-E.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">These paratroopers strap on sensors during field ops to help scientists measure performance<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The study will yield data for analysis aimed at improving soldier lethality and performance.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have noticed they are wearing them on the weekends, which is great to see,&#8221; said George Matook, MASTR-E program manager. \u201cThey\u2019ll tag that they\u2019re going on a hike, and that\u2019ll create a workout profile on the watch and capture all that data.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The program falls under the Army\u2019s Combat Capabilities Development Command Soldier Center, which folds into an ongoing project to build a Soldier Squad Performance Research Institute, also called the S2PRINT facility at the CCDC\u2019s center in Natick, Massachusetts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An early version of MASTR-E was taken up by soldiers at Fort Bragg, N.C., in 2018, when paratroopers with the 2nd BN, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd BCT, took part in an initial study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers followed along with paratroopers through a 14-field study, taking 210 measurements, Army Times reported at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They ran through a gamut of events, including pre-mission planning, mission execution and post-mission measuring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That included a look at biomechanics, load carriage, performance nutrition, equipment use, injury reporting, navigation and recovery times, among other things. (Michael Strasser\/Army)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those remain the focus of the more matured program now, Matook said in the recent statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd if you can tie those basic things together, then you can get a picture of how they are training, how hard they are training, and (whether) they are training too much,\u201d Matook said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAre they sleeping enough ahead of a training event \u2014 going into it already at a deficit \u2014 or are they really getting ready for an event?\u201d he said. \u201cThis allows you to start managing movement and maneuver, and mission command, when they get out in the field.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The devices track resting heart rate, body temperature changes, respiratory rate, sleep cycles and activity levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond performance, analysts can track metrics for potential infection or illness, keeping a closer eye on the health of the soldier and the squad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the stress shoot course this past week, analysts were looking at both the biomarkers and the actual shooting performance in drills, said Joseph Patterson, the CCDC Soldier Center work package lead for MASTR-E.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are trying out a research methodology on tactical stress and decision making,\u201d Patterson said in the release. \u201cThe Army believes in \u2018Train as you fight,\u2019 so we are trying to put Soldiers through this assessment course in the conditions in which they would fight the current fight and future fights as well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The combination of tracking parameters can also give soldiers insight into how they spend their down time and its effects on their performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo, they can understand how certain life decisions \u2014 like playing video games until 2 in the morning \u2014 will then relate to actions on the objective,\u201d Patterson said. \u201cOr, if they have a healthy dinner, do foam rolling and have healthy modalities, then they can train better and have a better outcome.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 4th BN operations officer, Maj. Adam Cucchiara, said the new tech and its hard numbers have helped him gain better insight into soldier performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis has helped us to quantify what is arguably pretty hard to quantify in terms of how we\u2019re doing,\u201d he said. \u201cNow we can say, \u2018this is exactly how well you slept last night,\u2019 or \u2018this is how fast you ran and here\u2019s how your heart rate changed when presented with this tactical problem.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That goes as well for the internal stress a soldier has just before or after a training event. A soldier might seem cool and collected on the inside, but internally he or she is ramping up, and that shows in the metrics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen we see how that may translate into decisions that they make, right off the bat,\u201d Cucchiara said. \u201cNow that we are able to quantify exactly what \u2018better\u2019 is, we can go back and see what we can do before we get to an event to make you better, make you faster, and give you more control over your breathing, your heart rate and your
