Under the program, recruits agreed in their enlistment contracts to apply to naturalize as soon as their honorable service was certified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe has a citizenship application that has been pending for over two years and she is entitled to citizenship,\u201d said Sameer Ahmed, staff attorney at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2018\/06\/22\/lawsuit-green-card-holders-face-bias-in-us-military-policy\/\" target=_blank>American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California<\/a> who is representing Sea. \u201cThey haven\u2019t made good on that promise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2018\/07\/17\/us-army-reverses-course-on-discharging-immigrant-recruit\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP18185149571477.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">US Army reverses course on discharging immigrant recruit<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The U.S. Army has reversed its decision to discharge an immigrant reservist who sued when he was booted from the military last month after enlisting with a promised path to citizenship, according to court filings and his attorney.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Department of Justice spokesman declined to comment on the case. Messages were sent to the Defense Department and Army seeking comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lawsuit comes as the U.S. Army has moved in recent weeks to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/07\/17\/us-army-reverses-course-on-discharging-immigrant-recruit\/\" target=\"_blank\">discharge immigrant recruits and reservists<\/a> who enlisted through the program, through which immigrants historically vowed to risk their lives for the prospect of U.S. citizenship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nearly 110,000 members of the Armed Forces have gained citizenship by serving in the U.S. military since Sept. 11, 2001, according to the Defense Department. She applied to naturalize in 2014 but was denied after immigration officials alleged there had been a fraudulent document in an earlier student visa application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sea believed the paperwork she obtained through an approved language school was legitimate, according to the lawsuit, but the school&#8217;s owner was convicted in a fraud case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sea reapplied for U.S. citizenship in 2016, but has not yet received an answer on her application. Once discharged from the military, she can&#8217;t work legally in the United States and could face deportation proceedings.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link
