{"id":25126,"date":"2015-10-17T14:28:21","date_gmt":"2015-10-17T14:28:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2015\/10\/17\/iraq-war-vet-faces-hearing-after-stolen-valor-argument\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T02:35:01","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T02:35:01","slug":"iraq-war-vet-faces-hearing-after-stolen-valor-argument","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2015\/10\/17\/iraq-war-vet-faces-hearing-after-stolen-valor-argument\/","title":{"rendered":"Iraq War vet faces hearing after stolen valor argument"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He never planned on becoming a case study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lonergan, who served in Iraq during his time with the Wisconsin National Guard, will face a hearing early next week with GWC officials resulting from an Oct. 6 incident in the school&#8217;s dining hall, where the 28-year-old graduate student confronted another student who&#8217;d allegedly claimed to have served as a Marine infantry officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Witnesses notified school officials of the incident \u2014\u00a0first reported by the <a href=\"http:\/\/wisconsindailyindependent.com\/iraqi-war-vet-gets-disciplined-for-exposing-a-fellow-students-stolen-valor\/\">Wisconsin Daily Independent<\/a> \u2014\u00a0and the next day, Lonergan received notice that he was expected to attend a hearing in six days\u00a0and would not be allowed on campus, except to attend class, until the matter was resolved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lonergan got a lawyer. His story made its way to <a href=\"http:\/\/thisainthell.us\/blog\/?p=62314\">military-themed blogs<\/a>, including those focused on <a href=\"http:\/\/guardianofvalor.com\/george-williams-college-is-trying-to-punish-a-veteran-for-calling-out-a-fraud\/\">stolen valor claims<\/a>. He appeared on radio and <a href=\"http:\/\/fox6now.com\/2015\/10\/13\/they-banned-me-from-campus-confrontation-lands-college-student-in-trouble\/\">local television<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">School officials said\u00a0the limited campus ban is part of the code of conduct and isn&#8217;t influenced by Lonergan&#8217;s service, and that all sides of the confrontation are being treated equally as disciplinary measures are\u00a0considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"368\" height=\"368\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635805844351215978-6235-10151330211323487-71210004-njpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-53030\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635805844351215978-6235-10151330211323487-71210004-njpg.jpg 368w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635805844351215978-6235-10151330211323487-71210004-njpg.jpg?resize=150,150 150w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635805844351215978-6235-10151330211323487-71210004-njpg.jpg?resize=300,300 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 368px) 100vw, 368px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span>Former Spc. Ryan Lonergan confronted an alleged Marine faker at his college and witnesses reported his actions to the school.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span>Photo Credit: Courtesy of Ryan Lonergan via Facebook<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The former soldier said that response is\u00a0part of the problem, and while he doesn&#8217;t approve of critics tearing into\u00a0the school online over the issue, administrators at GWC\u00a0&#8220;just\u00a0don&#8217;t know how to handle veterans.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This is the epitome of why they need to have a veterans organization and\u00a0a veterans infrastructure,&#8221; he said. &#8221;\u00a0&#8216;Oh, well he&#8217;s just a normal student&#8217;\u00a0\u2014 no, no, no.\u00a0You don&#8217;t throw a veteran off campus. Have they lost their minds?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The confrontation\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GWC, a campus of Aurora University, sits a bit more than 50 miles southwest of Milwaukee. Aurora\u00a0has about 5,500 &#8220;degree-seeking students&#8221; on four campuses, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/aurora.edu\/about\/index.html#axzz3ojmCz4FP\">its website<\/a>.\u00a0Lonergan had never met the purported Marine until the man approached him in the dining hall, commented on Lonergan&#8217;s service-themed stickers and started swapping war stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Except the stories didn&#8217;t make sense. Lonergan said the man told him about his unit using rubber bullets in a field exercise, about training at a location Lonergan had never heard of, and about a fellow service member stealing a\u00a0&#8220;Hummer&#8221; \u2014 not\u00a0a Humvee \u2014 and being tracked down using GPS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Oh, yeah, the BFT,&#8221; Lonergan recalled saying, referencing the common Blue Force Tracking system. Then he quickly issued a pop quiz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I said, &#8216;Is that the <em>biometric <\/em>force tracker?&#8217; I made it like a question,&#8221; Lonergan said. &#8220;And he agreed with me.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was enough to confirm Lonergan&#8217;s suspicions. He pulled the man aside and offered him a chance to come clean. Lonergan said he did just that, admitting to never having served a day in uniform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;When we were done, we walked back over [to the dining booth], and that&#8217;s kind of when my passion kind of clouded my judgement,&#8221; Lonergan said. &#8220;I told him, &#8216;Grab your food, grab your stuff.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;My voice carries, I was in the infantry, most guys&#8217; voices carry. &#8230; I wasn&#8217;t loud and thunderous, I was just like, &#8216;Grab your s&#8211;t, grab your food and get the f&#8211;k away from me. I don&#8217;t want you sitting near me.&#8217; And that&#8217;s what I said, that&#8217;s all I said. I wasn&#8217;t screaming.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Policy and punishment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;What we do, by default, in our student code of conduct \u2026 is we say, if someone issues this concern, we&#8217;re obligated to say, to everyone involved, &#8216;Hey, just limit your time on campus to when you have classes, just for a couple of days, until we can sort everything out,&#8217; &#8221; McFarland said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McFarland took issue with claims, including some posted on the school&#8217;s social media sites, that GWC is focusing only on Lonergan as it sorts out the incident and is thus behaving unfairly to veterans while failing to investigate stolen valor concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The conclusion that some people have jumped to is that only Ryan is being &#8216;investigated,&#8217; for lack of a better word, and that is simply not true,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McFarland would not say whether disciplinary proceedings were underway regarding the other student, citing federal privacy legislation. He did say the school was &#8220;following our procedure, which mandates treating all alleged participants equally,&#8221; and that GWC would comply with any law enforcement agency who wanted to investigate the purported Marine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Such an investigation would be unlikely unless evidence surfaced that the man had benefited, financially or otherwise, from his military\u00a0claims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some feedback has been positive, McFarland said, including from veterans &#8220;who\u00a0have said, &#8220;Listen, we get it, you guys have to figure this out. I just hope you treat everyone fairly.&#8217; &#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McFarland said the limited campus ban is not disciplinary in nature. Lonergan said it&#8217;s preventing him from putting time into his &#8220;field placement,&#8221;\u00a0a necessary component of his master&#8217;s degree that involves him interacting with students and school officials outside the classroom setting\u00a0\u2014 oddly, in this case, to determine how best to improve the school&#8217;s interaction with the veteran community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McFarland said he wasn&#8217;t aware of such work and that the ban may not apply. Lonergan said he isn&#8217;t risking it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I played their game,&#8221; he said. &#8220;If I&#8217;m not allowed on campus, I&#8217;m not allowed on campus.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Staying put<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lonergan said he has no intention of transferring from or dropping out of the school\u00a0unless a full-time job in his chosen career field \u2014 helping veterans\u00a0\u2014\u00a0falls into his lap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He has soured on plans to assist GWC with its veterans outreach, though, saying he&#8217;s now focused on earning his master&#8217;s degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite those feelings, he&#8217;s not thrilled about the negative attention the college has drawn thanks to coverage of his ordeal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I love what I do there,&#8221; he said of GWC. &#8220;I love the faculty. The students there are awesome. &#8230; I don&#8217;t want anyone to bash the school.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former Spc.
