{"id":25165,"date":"2020-10-03T05:37:13","date_gmt":"2020-10-03T05:37:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/10\/03\/paratroopers-fire-20-tow-missiles-in-return-to-large-scale-ground-combat-training\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T02:13:30","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T02:13:30","slug":"paratroopers-fire-20-tow-missiles-in-return-to-large-scale-ground-combat-training","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2020\/10\/03\/paratroopers-fire-20-tow-missiles-in-return-to-large-scale-ground-combat-training\/","title":{"rendered":"Paratroopers fire 20 TOW missiles in return to large-scale ground combat training"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-smg-jwplayer-video\"><atype-video-jwplayer nostick=\"true\" playlisturl=\"https:\/\/cdn.jwplayer.com\/v2\/playlists\/fCzRqMW8?tags=598ae028-75c1-437a-974d-62a4218128f0\" poster=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/video-poster-598ae028-75c1-437a-974d-62a4218128f0.jpg\" aspectratio=\"16 \/ 9\" mute autostart=\"false\"><\/atype-video-jwplayer><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soldiers with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2019\/10\/25\/the-army-is-finding-new-ways-to-airdrop-loads-large-and-small-even-in-urban-terrain\/\" target=_blank>82nd Airborne Division<\/a> recently conducted a large-scale missile fire, one that some soldiers don\u2019t get to see for an entire enlistment, if ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anti-tank platoons from 1st, 2nd and 3rd brigades of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/04\/23\/new-airborne-ruck-for-paratroopers-goes-to-the-82nd-this-year\/\" target=_blank>the 82nd<\/a> fired 20 tube-launched, optically tracked, wire-guided anti-tank missiles on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2019\/10\/10\/paratrooper-with-82nd-airborne-rushes-into-burning-car-to-save-drivers-life\/\" target=_blank>Fort Bragg, North Carolina<\/a>. Some TOW gunners might serve more than one enlistment without doing an actual live fire of the weapons system. Individual rounds can cost between $55,000 and $94,000, depending on the variant, according to industry sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But this type of training folds into the Army\u2019s shift back to large-scale combat operations training. Should the 82nd be dropped into a fight with Russia or China, knocking out tanks or other armored formations will be crucial.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2018\/04\/23\/this-army-unit-tested-the-newest-paladin-howitzer-by-firing-hundreds-of-rounds-a-day-for-weeks\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Paladin-at-Riley1.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">This Army unit tested the newest Paladin howitzer by firing hundreds of rounds a day for weeks<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Cannon-cockers with the 1st Infantry Division\u2019s \u201cBonecrusher\u201d Battery fired hundreds of artillery rounds a day for two weeks straight to test the Army\u2019s newest upgrades to the Paladin howitzer.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen we jump in as 82nd Airborne Division, we heavy drop those vehicles into a battle, sending our paratroopers from a C-17 or C-130, find those vehicles, pick those up, then execute a search and destroy of tanks,\u201d said Capt. Matthew Dakota, officer-in-charge of the Sept. 27 shoot and Delta Company commander with the 2nd Battation, 2nd Brigade Combat Team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shoots such as these are also within larger Army plans to increase training volume and the number of units participating. In 2018 soldiers with the 1st Battalion, 5th Artillery Regiment, fired hundreds of rounds with the 155mm Paladin self-propelled howitzerat Fort Riley, Kansas, during a near continuous, two-week training cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The TOW opportunity came somewhat suddenly, in the midst of Dakota\u2019s unit readiness training. About three months of preparation got the gunners and paratroopers ready to shoot these weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lt. Col. Michael Burns, public affairs officer with the 82nd, noted that the division\u2019s responsibility as an immediate response force means that paratroopers trained on such systems gives them the \u201cability to protect their units, gives us a tactical advantage as well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1199\" height=\"629\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/TOW.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-53056\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/TOW.jpg.jpg 1199w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/TOW.jpg.jpg?resize=300,157 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/TOW.jpg.jpg?resize=768,403 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/TOW.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,537 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1199px) 100vw, 1199px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Paratroopers assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division executed a live fire range using the Tube-launched, Optically tracked, Wire-guided or TOW weapon system. This Improved Target Acquisition System (ITAS) provides long-range sensor and anti-armor\/precision assault fire capabilities, enabling the Soldier to shape the battlefield by detecting and engaging targets at long range with Tube-Launched, Optically Tracked, Wireless-Guided (TOW) Missiles; or directing the employment of other weapon systems to destroy those targets. ITAS is a multipurpose weapon system, used as a reconnaissance, surveillance and target acquisition sensor.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some new soldiers might not understand the significance of the shoot, but more experienced soldiers do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s a pretty rare opportunity,\u201d said Staff Sgt. Joseph McElroy of 1st Platoon, Delta Company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McElroy, who helps run the basic skills trainer and has completed the heavy weapons leader course, said it was the first time he\u2019s seen a live fire of this key weapon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And they got to shoot the new, wirelessly controlled variant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In rotations to the Joint Readiness Training Center in Fort Polk, Louisiana, they typically shoot a simulated attack with the systems, McElroy said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This shoot was much more than a dry run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dakota said that they simulated combat conditions as best as possible to make the shoot realistic for the soldiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou can spend all the time you want in simulators at the electronic range, but it really doesn\u2019t compare to feeling the power of the weapons system as it leaves the launch tube,\u201d Dakota said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They worked on issued intelligence, coordination and sustainment of the formation to the shoot site. Soldiers then moved. That force included 16 vehicles in a fleet, eight equipped with TOWs using two vehicles, one in an elevated firing position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The scenario included a squad leader, called into position to identify targets at 1,100 meters, who communicated with the vehicles to set up the fires and then destroy the targets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s well within the range of the system, whose optics can spot targets out to 10km and hit targets past the 4km mark, knocking out some enemy main battle tanks with one shot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spc. Steven Cronin is serving at his first duty station at Fort Bragg. class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe were definitely nervous to miss the target,\u201d he said. \u201cYou don\u2019t want to be the guy to miss.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But
