She was released only because the grand jury&#8217;s term expired. Before she left the jail, she received another subpoena demanding her testimony on May 16 to a new grand jury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her lawyers say she will again refuse to answer questions and could again face another term of incarceration.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2019\/05\/08\/chelsea-manning-says-shell-never-testify-seeks-release\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"156\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP19112540609887.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Chelsea Manning says she\u2019ll never testify, seeks release<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Former Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning said in a new legal motion that she will never testify to a grand jury in Virginia investigating the website Wikileaks, and it therefore makes no sense to continue to keep her in jail for refusing to do so.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Manning served seven years in a military prison for leaking a trove of documents to WikiLeaks before then-President Barack Obama commuted the remainder of her 35-year sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this week, Manning&#8217;s lawyers filed court papers arguing that she should not be jailed for civil contempt because she has proven that she will stick to her principles and won&#8217;t testify no matter how long she&#8217;s jailed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Federal law only allows a recalcitrant witness to be jailed on civil contempt if there&#8217;s a chance that the incarceration will coerce the witness into testifying. If a judge were to determine that incarcerating Manning were punitive rather than coercive, Manning would not be jailed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;At this point, given the sacrifices she has already made, her strong principles, her strong and growing support community, and the disgrace attendant to her capitulation, it is inconceivable that Chelsea Manning will ever change her mind about her refusal to cooperate with the grand jury,&#8221; her lawyers wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Manning filed an eight-page statement with the court on Monday, outlining her resolve. She wrote that &#8220;cooperation with this grand jury is simply not an option. Doing so would mean throwing away all of my principles, accomplishments, sacrifices, and erase decades of my reputation \u2014 an obvious impossibility,&#8221; she wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She also said she was suffering disproportionately in jail because of physical problems related with inadequate follow-up care to gender-reassignment
