If you have 30 minutes to burn, you can watch the Army&#8217;s official OPAT instructional video\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=doywVP-eQYw\">here<\/a>.\u00a0In the meantime, here&#8217;s what we know about the four physical events:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br\/><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"left\" alternate=\"\" assetid=\"84284244\" assettype=\"oembed\" class=\"imgAsset middle\" credit=\"\" cutline=\"Army will soon roll out new PT test for recruits\" providername=\"Army Times\" src=\"\/Portals\/_default\/Skins\/PrestoLegacy\/CommonCss\/images\/smartembed.png\" style=\"float: left;\" title=\"Army will soon roll out new PT test for recruits [oembed : 84284244] [oembed : 84284244] [oembed : 84284244] [oembed : 84284244]\" width=\"50px\"\/><strong>Standing long jump<br\/> Why:\u00a0<\/strong>Measures lower-body power \u2013 muscles used in repetitive lifting and carrying tasks such as offloading supplies or ammunition.<br\/><strong>How:\u00a0<\/strong>&#8220;At least two submaximal practice jumps,&#8221; according to the Army\u2019s instructional video, followed by &#8220;three successful jumps,&#8221; with the results of each recorded to the nearest centimeter.<br\/><strong>Do:\u00a0<\/strong>Make up to four arm &#8220;counter-movements&#8221; \u2013 swing your arms back and forth as part of the jump motion.<br\/><strong>Don\u2019t:\u00a0<\/strong>Hop before the jump or take off with one foot. On &#8220;go&#8221; from the test-giver, they hold a 4.4-pound medicine ball to their chest, pause, then &#8220;push\/throw \u2026 upwards and outwards at a 45 degree angle,&#8221; per the Army instructional video. Two practice throws followed by three that count, with all scores recorded to the nearest quarter-meter.<br\/><strong>Do:<\/strong>\u00a0Keep your back on the pad\/wall. Flex your wrists at the end of the throw for extra distance.<br\/><strong>Don&#8217;t:<\/strong>\u00a0Pretend you&#8217;re Stephen Curry \u2013 a basketball-style release will cost you distance and could force a re-do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"814\" height=\"419\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635980551588402585-deadliftjpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-53266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635980551588402585-deadliftjpg.jpg 814w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635980551588402585-deadliftjpg.jpg?resize=300,154 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635980551588402585-deadliftjpg.jpg?resize=768,395 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 814px) 100vw, 814px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span>The strength deadlift can measure a soldier&#8217;s ability to pull a wounded soldier to safety.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span>Photo Credit: Army<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Strength deadlift<br\/> Why:<\/strong>\u00a0Measures lower-body strength \u2013 critical for casualty evacuation, for example.<br\/><strong>How:<\/strong>\u00a0After a practice lift to check for proper form, recruits will use a hexagon barbell to deadlift 100 pounds, then 140, then 180 and finally 220. One lift per weight, no skipping lifts \u2013 all successful lifts will be recorded. One minute&#8217;s rest allowed between lifts. Fail a lift? You get a re-try after a one-minute break.<br\/><strong>Do:\u00a0<\/strong>Maintain proper deadlift form, with knees under shoulders and aligned with toes. Keep your head up and your heels on the ground. Test-givers will watch for poor form and disallow lifts.<br\/><strong>Don&#8217;t:<\/strong>\u00a0Be a hero. Test-givers also will watch for recruits who may injure themselves. After a minute or so of warm-up, the beeps begin getting closer together. Test-takers must reach the line before the beep \u2013 get beat by the beep three times in a row, you&#8217;re done. Test-givers will record the recruit&#8217;s last successful interval.<br\/><strong>Do:<\/strong>\u00a0Keep plugging, even after you start falling behind. The three-strikes-and-you&#8217;re-out counter resets if you beat the beep, so one or two well-timed, full-out sprints could extend your time on the course.<br\/><strong>Don&#8217;t:<\/strong>\u00a0Show off by sprinting through the early intervals.
