For now, the department is not part of the White House effort to send 500 million at-home tests to Americans in coming weeks, free of charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of those tests aren\u2019t expected to arrive until sometime in February. Meanwhile, many veterans and their family members have been looking for tests right away, to check on their health and meet new mandates for entry into public facilities and events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In recent weeks, the number of active cases among department patients has skyrocketed, with hospitals adding more than 1,100 inpatients with severe coronavirus complications in the last two weeks alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/12\/30\/covid-19-cases-within-va-hit-new-pandemic-highs\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6472893.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">COVID-19 cases within VA hit new pandemic highs<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The department recorded more than 27,000 cases on Thursday morning, almost 30 percent above its January high.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA health officials have conducted more than 6.2 million coronavirus tests at medical centers since the start of the pandemic in America in March 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Diagnostic testing is available for veterans who are enrolled in VA health care and meet criteria from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which includes individuals who are showing symptoms of infection or have been in close contact with others who have tested positive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans should call ahead for appointments for testing, to limit wait time when they arrive at the facility. But veterans in need of emergency care can visit any medical center for aid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More information is available at <a
