Raymond Kelley received the Silver Star at a ceremony hosted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2015\/11\/28\/national-marine-corps-museum-plans-massive-expansion\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">National Museum of the Marine Corps <\/a>on May 18 \u2015 exactly 51 years after the fateful incident that earned him the nation\u2019s third highest award for combat bravery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kelley was a machine gun team leader serving with Company D, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2017\/01\/18\/marine-killed-in-training-accident-identified-second-marine-in-critical-condition\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">1st Battalion, 3rd Marines<\/a>, on May 18, 1967, when his outfit was tasked to provide relief to a pinned down unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kelley maneuvered his team to provide suppressive fire on the enemy position, but enemy fire intensified on Kelley\u2019s unit and the team took multiple casualties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDisregarding his own safety, Lance Corporal Kelley repeatedly placed himself in the open in order to assist the wounded Marines to the platoon command post where they could receive medical attention,\u201d the award citation reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"721\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/861.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34053\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/861.jpg.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/861.jpg.jpg?resize=300,180 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/861.jpg.jpg?resize=768,461 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/861.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,615 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A picture of Hill 861 south Landing Zone in Vietnam July 28, 1967. (Marine Corps)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kelley refused to allow his position to be captured by the enemy, \u201cand ignoring his own wounds, murderously engaged the enemy until they broke contact,\u201d the citation states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Silver Star award was approved in August 2017, but Kelley and fellow Marines waited until the anniversary of the firefight, museum officials told Marine Corps Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kelley\u2019s Silver Star is the second this year to be awarded to a Marine who fought in the Vietnam War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First Lt. Philip H. Sauer was posthumously awarded the Silver Star for holding off an enemy attack with his .45-caliber pistol while on a recon patrol of Hill 861 in Vietnam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sauer and his five-man patrol came under a sudden attack on April 24, 1967, which immediately killed the point man. Sauer ordered his men to withdraw and held the position with his pistol. He sacrificed his life that day so that some of his men could live to fight another day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His surviving siblings accepted the award at a ceremony held aboard
