{"id":28406,"date":"2019-01-22T17:10:20","date_gmt":"2019-01-22T17:10:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/01\/22\/isis-car-bomb-targets-us-troops-in-syria-one-week-after-four-americans-were-killed-in-manbij\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T02:48:25","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T02:48:25","slug":"isis-car-bomb-targets-us-troops-in-syria-one-week-after-four-americans-were-killed-in-manbij","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/flashpoints\/2019\/01\/22\/isis-car-bomb-targets-us-troops-in-syria-one-week-after-four-americans-were-killed-in-manbij\/","title":{"rendered":"ISIS car bomb targets US troops in Syria one week after four Americans were killed in Manbij"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. and local partner forces were attacked Monday by what appears to have been a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2018\/04\/30\/car-bomb-wounds-eight-romanian-troops-multiple-civilians-in-afghanistan\/\" target=_blank>vehicle-borne improvised explosive device<\/a> in northeastern Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both the U.S. and its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/11\/13\/us-backed-fighters-resume-final-offensive-against-isis-after-pause-to-deal-with-turkish-tensions\/\" target=\"_blank\">Syrian Democratic Force<\/a> allies denied any casualties resulted from the incident, although local <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawarnews.com\/en\/haber\/3-fighters-including-an-american-were-wounded-in-al-shadadi-bombing-h6342.html\" target=\"_blank\">Kurdish news media reported<\/a> immediately after the incident that one U.S. service member and some local security forces were \u201cslightly injured.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ISIS-affiliated Amaq News Agency took responsibility for the attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe can confirm a combined U.S. and Syrian partner force convoy was involved in an apparent VBIED attack today in Syria. There were no U.S. casualties,&#8221; Army Col. Sean Ryan, a spokesman for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2019\/01\/08\/are-we-leaving-syria-or-not\/\" target=\"_blank\">coalition to defeat the Islamic State<\/a>, said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The attack occurred on a road outside Al-Shaddadi, a town in Syria\u2019s Al-Hasakah province. The location is a roughly five-hour drive east of the site of the last bomb attack against U.S. troops in the town of Manbij. Al-Shaddadi was liberated from ISIS in February 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The targeted vehicle shown in pictures taken by local news media appears to be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2017\/09\/10\/us-backed-kurdish-fighters-get-lenco-bearcat-armored-vehicles\/\" target=_blank>Lenco BearCat<\/a>. (ANHA)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The attack occurred during a \u201croutine field mission,&#8221; SDF officials said, adding that ISIS has been \u201cintensifying its attacks&#8221; as the group\u2019s last stretches of physical territory dissolve across Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The idea that ISIS would transition to an insurgency after the fall of its caliphate is one that terrorism analysts have long warned was likely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last week, a group of American military personnel and U.S. Defense Department civilians were attacked by a suicide bomber while conducting a meeting in a restaurant in Manbij. The deceased included two U.S. service members, one Defense Intelligence Agency civilian and one American contractor working as an interpreter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ISIS&#8217; suicide attacks come as the group is deteriorating across Syria, but especially in the Middle Euphrates River Valley near the Iraq-Syria border. Small villages are liberated from ISIS on a near-weekly basis, but the terror group has between 20,000 and 30,000 members distributed between Syria and Iraq, the United Nations Security Council <a href=\"https:\/\/undocs.org\/en\/S\/2018\/770\" target=_blank>said in a report<\/a> this summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While ISIS&#8217; presence isn\u2019t in doubt, the question remains: Will the presence of U.S. troops in Syria beyond the defeat of ISIS&#8217; caliphate help deter the group, and at what cost?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Donald Trump voiced interest in leaving Syria over <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump\/status\/1075397797929775105\" target=\"_blank\">Twitter<\/a> in December after news came that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2018\/12\/16\/end-days-nearing-for-islamic-state-in-syria-says-coalition-official\/\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. and SDF troops liberated Hajin,<\/a> one of the last urban ISIS strongholds in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Trump\u2019s claim that \u201cwe have defeated ISIS in Syria\u201d is doubted by many analysts, some do agree that leaving after ISIS&#8217; physical holdings are eliminated would be prudent.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2018\/09\/25\/the-white-house-just-revealed-massive-mission-creep-in-syria-heres-why\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/3978211.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The White House has revealed massive mission creep in Syria. to me,\u201d Joshua Landis, director of the Center for Middle East Studies at the University of Oklahoma, told Military Times in September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Landis suggested that the U.S. should get out of Syria and \u201callow the country to knit itself back together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat America is doing today, which is dividing Syria without spending significant money to rebuild, is going to open the doors for al-Qaida or ISIS to come back,\u201d Landis said. \u201cWe\u2019re just keeping this hollowed-out region, hollowed
