{"id":28916,"date":"2021-09-10T14:02:39","date_gmt":"2021-09-10T14:02:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2021\/09\/10\/acrobatic-squirrels-may-hold-the-key-to-better-jumping-robots-in-army-funded-research\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T02:29:06","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T02:29:06","slug":"acrobatic-squirrels-may-hold-the-key-to-better-jumping-robots-in-army-funded-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2021\/09\/10\/acrobatic-squirrels-may-hold-the-key-to-better-jumping-robots-in-army-funded-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Acrobatic squirrels may hold the key to better jumping robots in Army-funded research"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those twitchy jumping <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/news\/403222\/leaping-squirrels-could-help-scientists-develop-more-agile-robots\" target=\"_blank\">squirrels <\/a>that spring from branch to branch near homes, parks and on tree-filled college campuses could hold a key to building military robots capable of similar acrobatics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2021\/04\/25\/army-wants-robots-sensors-to-make-infantry-platoons-10-times-better\/\" target=\"_blank\">Army<\/a>-funded research has scientists examining all the intricacies of how squirrels leap from branch to branch to\u2026wherever they land, in an effort to find ways to translate that bouncy behavior to the battlefield of the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Robert Full, professor at the University of California, Berkeley and Dr. Nathanial Hunt, assistant professor of biomechanics at the University of Nebraska, Omaha, are working with Dr. Lucia Jacobs, a professor of psychology and former UC Berkeley doctoral student Judy Jinn to study cognition in wild campus squirrels and tie that with studies of biomechanics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their work was published in the August issue of the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1126\/science.abe5753\" target=\"_blank\">Science<\/a>, with the subheading \u201cSquirrel parkour.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2021\/06\/02\/cockroaches-trains-and-tanks-help-army-scientists-build-better-legged-robots\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ARL-legged-robot.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Cockroaches, trains and tanks help Army scientists build better legged robots<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Recent research shows legged robots can be as efficient as tracked or wheeled versions.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Parkour is a street-level acrobatic movement discipline in which participants move their bodies in dynamic ways on, over, around and through obstacles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On some less straight-forward jumps, squirrels would adjust mid-jump and push off nearby surfaces, like a squirrel version of human parkour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The work is key to a military audience because most robots of today do their work in a confined space and perform limited, repeatable tasks, Dr. Dean Culver, program manager for Complex Dynamics and Systems program at Army Research Office told Army Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think assembly line robots putting together pieces of a car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s more advanced stuff going on with human-looking robots climbing objects, jumping on and off of boxes. (UC-Berkeley)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers noticed the dexterity of squirrels in all corners of the Berkeley campus. That triggered some research questions about just how they move through the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Culver applauded the approach of looking to the natural world for a robot solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt takes a kind of curious mind to look at those questions or situations that most of us take for granted and recognize hey there\u2019s actually some scientific result here that can be really useful for the development of engineered systems in the future,\u201d Culver said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even organisms as \u201csimple\u201d as worms require a great deal of research to understand how they function. More complex animals such as squirrels, dogs, or other mammals are vastly more complex, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Could jumping like a squirrel help?<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humans can\u2019t jump like squirrels. If developers want robots that can do things humans can\u2019t, they might look to the natural world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs a model organism to understand the biological limits of balance and agility, I would argue that squirrels are second to none,\u201d Hunt said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By understanding how squirrels do the leaping that they do, Hunt said scientists may, \u201cdiscover general principles of high-performance locomotion in the canopy and other complex terrains,\u201d that could work in a variety of settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBy studying controlling and actuating behaviors going on in the squirrels brain, limbs, trunk we can design robots with similar versatility,\u201d Culver said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To do this work, researchers attracted wild fox squirrels that ramble through a eucalyptus grove on the Berkeley campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They put them \u201cinto sketchy situations where they had to decide whether to leap for a peanut or let it go,\u201d according to the release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Squirrels automatically adjusted how cautious they were when leaping based on how flimsy or compliant the branch was where they had to leap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the animals adjusted as they went, and were successful, regardless of the branch after only a few tries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even if they misjudged, the squirrel\u2019s sharp claws kept them from falling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their claws were so effective, that not one of the squirrels ever fell, despite unsteady leaps and overshot or undershot landings, Hunt said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey have redundancy. So, if they miss, they don\u2019t hit their center of mass right on the landing perch, they\u2019re amazing at being able to grab onto it,\u201d Hunt said. \u201cThey\u2019ll swing underneath, they\u2019ll swing over the top. They just don\u2019t fall.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The squirrels could also adjust for speed, compensating in their landing if they came in too fast or slow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All of the observations and testing feed into ways in which scientists can understand how the squirrel engages its brain, muscles, nervous system, skeletal system and more to accomplish the feats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Breaking down those individual components and seeing how they work together opens up ways to understand how to build a system that could do the same kind of movements and adjustments, Culver said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The team has much work to do to advance their understanding, Culver added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the work on the squirrels can dive into five pillars of understanding biomechanics \u2014 controllers, actuators, sensors, structure and energy management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Together they combine to create complex movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not the only animal movement study that could apply to the field. Culver is confident that the research could yield animal-like movement in robots outside of the laboratory in the next 20 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Correction: This article
