The move could eventually lead to more widespread use across the services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>XStat <a href=\"http:\/\/archive.armytimes.com\/article\/20140208\/NEWS04\/302080004\/Injectable-sponges-can-stop-bleeding-15-seconds\" title=\"http:\/\/archive.armytimes.com\/article\/20140208\/NEWS04\/302080004\/Injectable-sponges-can-stop-bleeding-15-seconds\">consists<\/a> of a pocket-sized syringe full of 92<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"notes\" src=\"\/DesktopModules\/UDMW\/TextEditor\/images\/cq.png\"\/> tiny disc-shaped sponges made of special sterile cellulose and coated with chitosan, a clotting agent. They can expand to about 10 times their size, providing hemostatic pressure and blocking blood flow until the wounded patient can get surgical care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=4&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=0CDQQFjAD&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dtic.mil%2Fcgi-bin%2FGetTRDoc%3FAD%3DADA609264&amp;ei=NQE4VbSpDPaLsQSvhYGoBQ&amp;usg=AFQjCNGekfBX1VkIMuWUe9EJ2fIe1pQdMA&amp;sig2=NkL1nJR4WX-AlSbswAVJdA&amp;bvm=bv.91427555,d.b2w\" title=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=4&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=0CDQQFjAD&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dtic.mil%2Fcgi-bin%2FGetTRDoc%3FAD%3DADA609264&amp;ei=NQE4VbSpDPaLsQSvhYGoBQ&amp;usg=AFQjCNGekfBX1VkIMuWUe9EJ2fIe1pQdMA&amp;sig2=NkL1nJR4WX-AlSbswAVJdA&amp;bvm=bv.91427555,d.b2w\">Army study in 2012<\/a> indicated hemorrhaging accounted for 90 percent of deaths in potentially survivable battlefield cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The ability to pack a wound within seconds, to get to a point of a bleed, can allow a medic to focus on the patient. It&#8217;s a limited purchase and limited distribution within SOCOM.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SOCOM acquisitions spokesman Navy Capt. Kevin Aandahl also said he couldn&#8217;t say how many Xstats were purchased or who would receive them. He did say distribution would include special operations troops from the Army, Air Force, Marine Corps and Navy, and that selected units for fielding &#8220;would be the units most likely to need it: deploying units.&#8221; <br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He declined to specify the per-unit cost of XStat, in part because the price should be dropping significantly when full-rate production capability launches. He indicated XStat currently isn&#8217;t cheap, but said much of the cost is built into the current &#8220;hand-made manufacturing&#8221; process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scaled-up production will increase stock and reduce costs, Luciano said, and XStat &#8220;will be a medical device everyone should have.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some special
