Daniel Chamberlain Lehman<\/a>\u2019s parents, who were in the courtroom, as he admonished <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/10\/14\/man-arrested-in-death-of-us-army-captain-in-colorado\/\" target=_blank>Gilberto Chavez Jr.<\/a> for killing \u201ca wholly innocent victim.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s no closure because this case is over,\u201d Bain said. \u201cEvery day, they\u2019re going to live with the fact that you killed their son for no other reason than it would be fun.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lehman, a 28-year-old officer at Fort Carson who was from Santa Fe, New Mexico, was shot in downtown Colorado Springs while walking home in September 2018. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials said Chavez was under the influence of drugs and trial testimony suggested he had wanted to \u201ctake someone out,\u201d for unexplained reasons. He tattooed the outline of a body on his back and started calling himself \u201cGilly the Kid\u201d on social media, prosecutors said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chavez unsuccessfully argued that he acted in self-defense after Lehman \u201ccame at him.\u201d In October, a jury convicted him of second-degree murder. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He declined to address the court or Lehman\u2019s parents at Friday\u2019s hearing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lehman\u2019s mother, Laurie Chamberlain Lehman, said her son \u2014 a West Point graduate and Army intelligence officer \u2014 was a \u201chumble genius\u201d and had been on a promising career path. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf I believed in
