{"id":29623,"date":"2020-03-20T22:17:00","date_gmt":"2020-03-20T22:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/03\/20\/total-army-coronavirus-cases-reaches-45-testing-capacity-still-limited\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T02:17:48","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T02:17:48","slug":"total-army-coronavirus-cases-reaches-45-testing-capacity-still-limited","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2020\/03\/20\/total-army-coronavirus-cases-reaches-45-testing-capacity-still-limited\/","title":{"rendered":"Total Army coronavirus cases reaches 45 \u2014 testing capacity still limited"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2020\/03\/20\/army-basic-training-slowed-as-6-recruits-removed-for-possible-coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\">Coronavirus cases among Army personnel<\/a> have reached 45, service leadership said Friday, but they need to increase testing capacity at hospitals across Army installations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That number includes 21 soldiers, six Department of the Army civilian employees, eight family members and ten contractors, said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2020\/01\/16\/army-sets-end-of-year-window-for-sfabs-to-deploy-outside-afghanistan\/\" target=_blank>Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy<\/a> at the Pentagon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army has eight soldiers in medical treatment facilities after testing positive for the novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, said Army surgeon general Lt. Gen. Scott Dingle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis afternoon, it could go higher,\u201d Dingle added. \u201cBut again, the soldiers who have been identified as positive with COVID, they are in proper treatment and care.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those are just positive cases in isolation. There are far more soldiers in isolation facilities who have shown possible coronavirus symptoms, but who have not yet officially tested positive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s impossible to know at any given time the number of soldiers in isolation, according to Lt. Gen. Charles Flynn, the Army\u2019s deputy chief of staff of operations, plans and training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t have a number, because it changes hourly,\u201d Flynn said. \u201cEvery senior commander on his installation back here in the continental United States has to create isolation facilities and quarantine facilities. Others are tent cities outside large Army posts that resemble forward operating bases downrange. Those quarantine sites are occupied by soldiers returning from overseas deployments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The latest medical data shows that the coronavirus hits younger populations worse than originally believed. That is relevant to the armed forces, which heavily relies on young, typically healthy adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knowing that reality prompted the Army to implement pandemic emergency preparedness plans, which take into account rises in illnesses among soldiers and their families, Dingle said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are prepared for an increased wave,\u201d he added. Over the course of the next 30 days, the Army wants to expand testing capability to smaller medical facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are pieces along this supply chain that the Medical Research and Development Command are going to help procure to increase capacity,\u201d said Army Sec. McCarthy. \u201cAs [Defense] Sec. Esper said the other day, the Department of Defense will over and above take care of the force to support the civilian population.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo it\u2019s
