Defense Minister Amir Hatami<\/a> said on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hatami, on a two-day visit to Syria, told the Beirut-based al-Mayadeen TV station that the agreement also stipulates helping rebuild Syria&#8217;s military industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The announcement comes as the U.S. under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2018\/07\/13\/trump-says-there-might-be-an-escalation-between-us-iran\/\" target=_blank>President Donald Trump<\/a> is toughening its stance on Iran\u2019s support for Syrian President Bashar Assad\u2019s government, which has weathered a calamitous civil war.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link country.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The White House has demanded that Iran extract itself from Syria as an essential precondition to lifting sanctions that went into effect earlier this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Israel has also been critical of Iran\u2019s expanding role in Syria, saying it won\u2019t tolerate a permanent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2018\/07\/05\/us-military-to-keep-persian-gulf-waterway-open-despite-iran-threats\/\" target=_blank>Iranian military presence <\/a>near its frontiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iran has been an essential backer of Syria&#8217;s government in the civil war now in its seventh year, providing advisers, military supplies, training and thousands of militiamen to fight alongside the Syrian army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hatami said Iran was in Syria at the invitation of the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The precise details of the agreement were not announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Syrian government does not release casualty numbers, but monitoring groups say the government has lost tens of thousands of fighters since the civil war broke out in 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iran and Russia
