{"id":31581,"date":"2022-04-04T21:26:44","date_gmt":"2022-04-04T21:26:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/04\/04\/marine-veteran-wrongfully-detained-in-russia-reportedly-ends-prison-hunger-strike\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:58:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:58:09","slug":"marine-veteran-wrongfully-detained-in-russia-reportedly-ends-prison-hunger-strike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/home\/middle-column\/2022\/04\/04\/marine-veteran-wrongfully-detained-in-russia-reportedly-ends-prison-hunger-strike\/","title":{"rendered":"Marine veteran \u2018wrongfully detained\u2019 in Russia reportedly ends hunger strike"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/2021\/12\/29\/state-department-calls-for-release-of-detained-marine-veterans-amid-rising-russia-tensions\/?contentFeatureId=f0fmoahPVC2AbfL-2-1-8&amp;contentQuery=%7B%22section%22%3A%22%2Fhome%22%2C%22exclude%22%3A%22%2Fnews%22%2C%22from%22%3A5%2C%22size%22%3A10%7D\" target=\"_blank\">two Marine Corps veterans imprisoned in Russia<\/a> for separate crimes they say they did not commit has ended a hunger strike protesting his treatment behind bars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thirty-year-old Trevor Reed reportedly started the protest March 28, claiming he not only had been wrongfully put in solitary confinement but also had medical care withheld despite concerns he had contracted tuberculosis from a fellow prisoner in December 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The former Marine Corps presidential guard member is serving a nine-year sentence for allegedly<a href=\"https:\/\/www.freetrevorreed.com\/the-incident-1\"> assaulting Russian police officers<\/a> during a night out with his girlfriend in Moscow in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOn Friday, April 1, the convict Reed ended his hunger strike and began to receive food,\u201d the Federal Penitentiary Service said, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/ex-us-marine-reed-sent-medical-facility-after-hunger-strike-russian-jail-ifax-2022-04-04\/\" target=\"_blank\">Reuters.<\/a> \u201cOn the same day, at his request, he was sent to the medical facility.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But despite recent statements from Russian authorities saying Reed has been tested for and treated for tuberculosis, Reed family spokesman Jonathan Franks <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jonfranks\/status\/1510980147154927620?s=20&#038;t=yCdFL56EqMAoEdGwyQ7ujQ\">shared a statement from Joey and Paula Reed<\/a> claiming their son still had \u201csymptoms consistent with active tuberculosis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Reeds are not able to confirm an end to Trevor\u2019s hunger strike,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/04\/04\/1090828587\/trevor-reed-russian-prison-hospital-hunger-strike\" target=\"_blank\">Franks wrote in an email to NPR<\/a>. \u201cWe would invite Russian authorities to let Trevor call his parents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the second time Reed has gone on a hunger strike, the first occurring in November 2021 alongside other family claims that their son was being treated poorly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRussian authorities are holding Trevor in a small room with a hole in the floor for a toilet,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/europe\/russia-us-trevor-reed-hunger-strike\/2021\/11\/09\/2d4648c2-4139-11ec-9404-50a28a88b9cd_story.html\">Reed\u2019s family said in a statement<\/a> in November 2021. \u201cThey will not allow him to communicate in his own language, to receive books or letters, to receive commissary items like other prisoners do, nor will they allow him to use a phone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP22089483233223.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-63565\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP22089483233223.jpg.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP22089483233223.jpg.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP22089483233223.jpg.jpg?resize=768,512 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Joey and Paula Reed, parents of U.S. Marine Corps veteran and Russian prisoner Trevor Reed, stand in Lafayette Park near the White House, Wednesday, March 30, 2022, in Washington, D.C. (Patrick Semansky\/AP Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time Reed was protesting, <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ap.org\/detail\/ParentsofmanjailedforyearsinRussiameetwithBiden\/70a253bb116e18a5b2b5ed2d2935d144\/text?Query=trevor%20reed&#038;mediaType=text&#038;sortBy=arrivaldatetime:desc&#038;dateRange=Anytime&#038;totalCount=6&#038;currentItemNo=1\" target=\"_blank\">his parents met with President Joe Biden<\/a> and senior White House officials following a March phone call with the president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDuring their meeting, the President reiterated his commitment to continue to work to secure the release of Trevor, Paul Whelan, and other Americans wrongfully held in Russia and elsewhere, and to provide all possible assistance until they and others are free and returned home to their families who are advocating so passionately for their release,\u201d White House press secretary Jen Psaki said following the March 30 meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also detained in Russia is Marine veteran Paul Whelan, from Novi, Michigan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following 14 years of service, in December 2018 Whelan was working as a security executive when he was arrested at his Moscow hotel for espionage. He is serving a 16-year sentence of hard labor at a prison camp in Mordovia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both Whelan and Reed have been listed as \u201cwrongful detainees\u201d by the U.S. government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Psaki also reportedly confirmed that the president\u2019s national security team would remain in contact with the Reed family as concerns over the two Marines\u2019 wrongful imprisonment continue to rise as the Russian invasion of Ukraine rages on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf this becomes long and drawn out, and they take over Ukraine, then the Western countries and the United States are going to be at odds with Russia for a long time,\u201d <a
