{"id":31987,"date":"2023-10-06T21:17:08","date_gmt":"2023-10-06T21:17:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/10\/06\/marine-veteran-agrees-to-plea-deal-in-january-6-capitol-riot-case\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T21:14:31","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T21:14:31","slug":"marine-veteran-agrees-to-plea-deal-in-january-6-capitol-riot-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/flashpoints\/2023\/10\/06\/marine-veteran-agrees-to-plea-deal-in-january-6-capitol-riot-case\/","title":{"rendered":"Marine veteran agrees to plea deal in January 6 Capitol riot case"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Marine Corps veteran who allegedly stormed the U.S. Capitol with a crowbar and pepper spray on Jan. 6, 2021, has agreed to plead guilty to two felony counts of obstruction of an official proceeding, and assaulting, resisting or impeding police, Washington D.C.\u2019s WUSA9 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wusa9.com\/article\/news\/national\/capitol-riots\/marine-corps-veteran-who-claimed-government-entrapment-on-jan-6-takes-plea-deal-ryan-taylor-nichols-alex-harkrider-1-watchdog-joseph-mcbride-geyer\/65-83265ad9-de7f-4d3b-bae4-069fb191499f\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a federal agent\u2019s affidavit, Ryan Taylor Nichols, of Longview, Texas, wielded a crowbar and large canister of pepper spray while surging into the Capitol on Jan. 6 alongside fellow Texan Alex Kirk Harkrider. Images and videos of the two men attempting to enter the Capitol building along with the mob were included in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/page\/file\/1356236\/download\" target=\"_blank\">Justice Department documents<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In one video, Nichols uses a bullhorn to direct the crowd, yelling, \u201cIf you have a weapon, you need to get your weapon!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In another video recorded from his hotel room in the immediate aftermath of the Capitol riot, Nichols, speaking in the third person, advocates using violence, according to the WUSA9 report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRyan Nichols is done allowing his country to be stolen,\u201d he says in the video. \u201cAnd I understand that the first Revolutionary War, folks, it was violent. We had to be violent and take our country back. Well guess what? The second Revolutionary War, right now, the American Revolutionary War that\u2019s going on right now, it started today on a Wednesday. It\u2019s going to be violent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo, if you want to know where Ryan Nichols stands, Ryan Nichols stands for violence,\u201d he continues. \u201cSo, yes, today, Ryan Nichols \u2026 Ryan Nichols grabbed his f\u2014ing weapon and he stormed the Capitol and fought for freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Social media accounts belonging to Nichols and Harkrider were reported to the FBI by two separate witnesses within weeks of Jan. 6, according to the affidavit. (Department of Justice)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nichols was arrested on Jan. 18 and was subsequently held in Smith County Jail in Tyler, Texas, before being moved to house arrest. He and Harkrider were originally charged with an array of criminal counts, including conspiracy and unlawful entry with a dangerous weapon, violent entry or disorderly conduct, civil disorder, assaulting a federal officer using a deadly or dangerous weapon, and aiding and abetting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those counts were narrowed to the aforementioned two following the prosecution\u2019s superseding criminal court filing on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nichols was originally expected to begin a jury trial in November.
