{"id":33206,"date":"2020-10-15T20:30:54","date_gmt":"2020-10-15T20:30:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/10\/15\/the-first-100-yards-and-thunder-run-introductions-to-infantry-and-armor-get-big-changes\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T02:37:59","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T02:37:59","slug":"the-first-100-yards-and-thunder-run-introductions-to-infantry-and-armor-get-big-changes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2020\/10\/15\/the-first-100-yards-and-thunder-run-introductions-to-infantry-and-armor-get-big-changes\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018The First 100 Yards\u2019 and \u2018Thunder Run\u2019: Introductions to infantry and armor get big changes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 21st century approach to training <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2019\/10\/15\/new-longer-army-infantry-training-is-making-better-shooters-soldiers-and-life-savers-data-shows\/\" target=_blank>new infantry<\/a> and armor soldiers now includes an early understanding of the legacy they\u2019ll carry and the kind of warfighter they\u2019ll be 22 weeks later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The infantry is calling its event \u201cThe First 100 Yards,\u201d an homage to their lineage of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2019\/10\/18\/army-hub-sees-generational-shift-in-going-to-the-fight\/\" target=_blank>closing the last 100 yards<\/a> of the fight, while the armor community has drawn from the Iraq war with its \u201cThunder Run\u201d to get new soldiers rolling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The changes sparked fair amounts of snark online, with many focusing on the end of \u201cshark attacks\u201d in which drill sergeants, for the past several decades, have swarmed stragglers in a blitz of pressure in the first minutes and hours of training, to shock them into submission.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2018\/10\/09\/big-training-changes-are-here-and-more-are-coming-for-combat-arms-soldiers\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Army-infantry-OSUT.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Big training changes are here \u2014 and more are coming for combat arms soldiers<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The training extension is here for infantry and coming soon to armor, engineer and the rest of ground combat.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the generals heading the infantry and armor schools, as well as their senior enlisted, see that take as shortsighted, missing the advances in training, soldier and leader development that the Army is pursuing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an interview with Army Times, Brig. Gen. David Hodne, Infantry School commandant and director of the Soldier Lethality Cross-Functional Team, pointed to the school\u2019s patch and motto as a clear indicator of the intent of training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That patch has an M1905 bayonet, and the motto is \u201cFollow Me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFollow me, it\u2019s easy to say, hard to do,\u201d Hodne said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s the first instruction an infantry sergeant should be giving a new soldier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt doesn\u2019t say, \u2018do as you\u2019re told,\u2019\u201d Hodne added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brig. Gen. Kevin Admiral told Army Times that the \u201cThunder Run\u201d initiation for Armor School soldiers will focus on \u201cteamwork from the very beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFrom the very first day they come here, they\u2019re part of a scout squad, a tank crew,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019re going to be part of a team that demands success.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hodne and Admiral both pointed out that the shark attack method was a relic from the draft-era Army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is a new time for our Army, and we need to move forward to something different,\u201d Admiral said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a talk during the annual Maneuver Warfighter Conference in September, the Infantry School\u2019s Command Sgt. Maj. Rob Fortenberry drew a distinct line, describing the shark attack method as a way that drill sergeants used to \u201cestablish dominance and authority using intimidation and fear to weed out the weak of heart.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This, coupled with drill sergeants singling out underperforming soldiers with mass attacks, was supposed to assess a new soldier\u2019s ability to handle stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis activity does not instill the spirit of the infantry,\u201d Fortenberry said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both Hodne and Fortenberry say the new event focuses instead on the \u201cspirit of the bayonet,\u201d outlined by Gen. George C. Marshall in FM23-25, the field manual published in 1943 in the midst of World War II. The manual drew inspiration from Marshall\u2019s time in the trenches during World War I.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe will to meet and destroy the enemy in hand-to-hand combat is the spirit of the bayonet,&#8221; Marshall wrote. \u201cIt springs from the fighter\u2019s confidence, courage and grim determination, and is the result of vigorous training. Through training, the fighting instinct of the individual soldier is developed to the highest point.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To do that, Hodne said, the cadre is using a phased approach, early in the training process, that develops teamwork, identifies informal leadership, establishes trust and builds esprit de corps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Fortenberry explained in his presentation, the five-phase approach begins with a series of questions and answers for the new soldiers, the battalion and company mottos, the unit chain of command and unit history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In phase two, they\u2019ll conduct a resupply mission, each platoon getting a mission order and conducting the tasks. By phase three they will compete in Army Combat Fitness Test events, the leg tuck, pushups and standing power throw. Each member will do as many reps as possible. The combined total in the fastest time will decide a group winner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The remaining groups will do corrective training exercises before being quizzed on the information they learned in phase one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then they\u2019ll be instructed on identifying equipment and correctly placing equipment in a designated staging area. They\u2019ll be graded. Attention to detail is key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In phase four, the soldiers meet the training cadre and witness an infantry demonstration of graduating soldiers who\u2019ve completed the 22-week One Station Unit Training. That way, Fortenberry said, they\u2019ll see what they\u2019re aiming to become.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, in phase five, each platoon moves to its respective area for the first 72 hours of red cycle training and the infantry selection process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe aim for instructors and commanders is clear \u2014 that (soldiers) believe they\u2019ve got the skill and will to accomplish the missions we\u2019re going to assign them,\u201d Hodne said. \u201cThey also believe in their teammates.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA soldier fell out in a shark attack, the only people who came to that soldier\u2019s aid were the drill sergeants,\u201d Hodne said. \u201cThe soldiers didn\u2019t come help, they were just glad they weren\u2019t the ones being attacked.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That kind of thinking must change, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drawing again from Marshall, Hodne quoted the general\u2019s key advice to Army training instructors: \u201cAvoid boisterous bullying\u201d and \u201cimpatient
