But even as the service deploys these units across the world for a variety of missions, they\u2019ve still got to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2021\/07\/26\/nanotech-built-armor-could-replace-kevlar-steel-for-soldier-protection\/\" target=\"_blank\">upgrade <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2021\/12\/03\/armor-crews-fire-new-barricade-busting-tank-round\/\" target=\"_blank\">update <\/a>these formations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently four of the Army\u2019s 11 active <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2022\/02\/25\/proposed-light-tank-battalion-concept-will-require-more-armor-crewmen\/\" target=\"_blank\">armored <\/a>brigade combat teams are deployed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even as those deployments push armor across the world, in recent months, the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, out of Fort Stewart, Georgia, has been the recipient of the most modern gear and capabilities these formations have seen in decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soldiers with experience are seeing measurable improvements from these new platforms already in their ability to maintain and operate, fire and move, soldiers with the brigade told Army Times recently.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2022\/03\/22\/armor-brigade-workload-may-dramatically-increase-if-ukraine-crisis-holds\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/7076842.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Armor brigade workload may dramatically increase if Ukraine crisis holds<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">If the Army&#039;s current requirements in Europe stick around, the service may have to tweak force structure.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the new features of these upgraded systems converge in a unit like the 2nd ABCT, its soldiers will face their own test in about a year when they test their mettle at the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are some of the changes the brigade and its division have seen since last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Added the new Joint Light Tactical Vehicles to their fleet<\/li><li>Incorporated cutting edge maintenance and diagnostic tools<\/li><li>Completed training with the Army\u2019s newest artillery system, the M109A7 Paladin howitzer<\/li><li>First to field the new M2A4 Bradley Fighting Vehicles<\/li><li>Tested the new Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle<\/li><li>Moved from the M1A1 Abrams to the M1A2 Sepv3 Abrams tank<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Staff Sgt. Sebastian Grabacki told Army Times that he\u2019s seen past and current variants of the Bradley in his six years on the system and the newest A4 variant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the changes he\u2019s seeing are not softer seats and a cup holder. They have a real effect on how his teams will engage the enemy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"481\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2nd-ABCT-NOTM-imagery.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-67377\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2nd-ABCT-NOTM-imagery.jpg.jpg 640w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2nd-ABCT-NOTM-imagery.jpg.jpg?resize=300,225 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Surrogate vehicle platforms integrated with a wide variety of  commercial mobile network technology prototypes. Detrick Moore\/Army)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPart of the qualification for gunnery, there is a multiple target engagement and before in the A3 variations you would not be able to immediately move from one target directly on to another,\u201d Grabacki said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grabacki works as a combat engineer in the 9th Brigade Engineer Battalion, 2nd ABCT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The A4\u2032s commander independent viewer allows the turret to be immediately dragged off the target just fired upon and put directly onto the next target, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soldiers could shoot at multiple targets before, just not as rapidly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The viewer gives the vehicle commander a measure of safety, too, because it allows them to check the area beyond their immediate field of view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCommanders would have to get outside of their turret and be exposed to enemy contact,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But in the new system the commander can stay inside the vehicle and still see all around for better situational awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"6720\" height=\"4480\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2nd-ABCT-Stryker.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-67383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2nd-ABCT-Stryker.jpg.jpg 6720w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2nd-ABCT-Stryker.jpg.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2nd-ABCT-Stryker.jpg.jpg?resize=768,512 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2nd-ABCT-Stryker.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,683 1024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2nd-ABCT-Stryker.jpg.jpg?resize=1536,1024 1536w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2nd-ABCT-Stryker.jpg.jpg?resize=2048,1365 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 6720px) 100vw, 6720px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A line of Strykers await upgrades of Common Remotely Operated Weapon Station-Javelin and the Common Remotely Operated Weapon Station Feb. 8 at Fort Carson, Colorado. But recent changes to how the vehicles are built and maintained have a real impact on the unit\u2019s readiness, soldiers said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chief Warrant Officer 2 Mark Mansbridge is the battalion maintenance chief for 1st Battalion, 9th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd ABCT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A huge time and work saver has been the Army\u2019s adoption of the common chassis and power pack system for the M109A7 Paladin, Bradley IFV and AMPVs, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That helps soldiers such as Mansbridge reduce the unit\u2019s logistical footprint. Instead of working on three different engines and having to order a variety of parts, his maintainers can train on one engine, know it back to front and get common parts to fix each of the systems uniformly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFrom an individual standpoint, for new soldiers, it\u2019s tangible,\u201d he said. \u201cAny time you get something new and shiny, it\u2019s exciting for those guys.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Back on the guns, Staff Sgt. (Army)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The M1A2 SEPv3 version of the venerable Abrams tank has the Common Remote Operated Weapons System, or CROWS, just like the new Bradley variants. The shooting system adjusts for the right ballistic balance depending on the round, has newer thermal sights, better optics and other features that push accuracy out by an additional kilometer, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One substantial improvement maximizes the most valuable training element: time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s a lot of downtime on any range, whether it\u2019s shooting M4 carbines, howitzers or Abrams tanks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But with the new electronic systems inside the Abrams, Lancaster can have his soldiers running simulations inside the vehicle, practicing target engagement and weapons familiarization. It even allows gunners to practice these features without moving the turret.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt just gives you more experience with the turret, how it\u2019s going to react with the fire control system overall, everything you\u2019re doing without having to fire live rounds,\u201d Lancaster said. \u201cYou\u2019re getting all of that training and getting more proficient and cohesive with your crew.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And an overlooked but always annoying feature has been fixed. Most of the testing and training modules used to take up valuable space inside the vehicle. New designs now have cables outside the vehicle and not crowding the cramped quarters inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These minor changes knit together in ways that affect not just the individual systems being fielded with 2nd ABCT but across the entire brigade and even division.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maj. Jeffrey Jennings, the division\u2019s chief of future operations, told Army Times that the recent technology won\u2019t fundamentally change doctrine or the battle-proven tactics of an ABCT, but will provide significant enhancements to the fight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re retaining our competitive edge and fielding new capabilities that allow soldiers to do their jobs, their core competencies with improved efficacy,\u201d Jennings said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That translates to less time in maintenance because the vehicles are more dependable, and improvements in lethality, mobility and enhanced ability to operate and survive in restricted terrain, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>*Correction: This article has been updated to reflect the correct spelling of Maj.
