{"id":33885,"date":"2020-03-13T17:21:32","date_gmt":"2020-03-13T17:21:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/03\/13\/soldiers-in-space-army-puts-out-call-for-astronauts\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T02:49:14","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T02:49:14","slug":"soldiers-in-space-army-puts-out-call-for-astronauts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2020\/03\/13\/soldiers-in-space-army-puts-out-call-for-astronauts\/","title":{"rendered":"Soldiers in space: Army puts out call for astronauts"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For every soldier who joined the Army to see the world and still hasn\u2019t satisfied their travel wishes, a chance to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/06\/01\/this-officer-is-set-to-be-the-first-army-doctor-to-launch-into-space\/\" target=_blank>see the entire globe<\/a> on a single mission is now available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s because qualified candidates have a chance to trade in their Army greens for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/2019\/10\/24\/army-astronaut-to-military-medical-students-you-will-solve-the-health-issues-of-extended-space-flight\/\" target=_blank>NASA blues<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From enlisted to warrant officer to commissioned officer, any qualified soldier can apply to the NASA Astronaut Candidate Program, according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/233428\/army_now_accepting_applications_for_next_astronaut?dmd\" target=_blank>Army statement<\/a>. Interested applicants can apply through Military Personnel message 20-062. The deadline is March 31.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the previous class, an estimated 200 soldiers applied for the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re hoping for a lot more (this year),\u201d said Lt. Col. Anne McClain. And she should know. The Army astronaut went through the program herself and spent six months in space in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/off-duty\/military-culture\/2020\/02\/25\/astronaut-to-administer-enlistment-oath-for-800-future-soldiers-from-space\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/200125-O-ZZ999-0001C.jpeg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Astronaut to administer enlistment oath for 800 future soldiers from space<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The enlistment ceremony will be available to live stream Feb. 26.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NASA selected the Spokane, Washington, native in 2013, after she spent most of her Army career as an aviator. Drew Morgan, who is currently serving nine-month space mission has already performed seven spacewalks. He began this mission as a flight engineer in July and is scheduled to return in March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The soldiers selected for the program often serve under the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command Astronaut Detachment. Those astronauts work as part of the flight crew for NASA space programs, according to their website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of their duties include working in both manned and unmanned operational space systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though she and Morgan were officers when they applied, that is not a requirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe get very, very few applicants who are warrants and NCOs,\u201d she said. \u201cSo, we really want to emphasize that branch doesn\u2019t matter, rank doesn&#8217;t matter. We really want folks to throw their hat in the ring.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Applicants chosen from the initial round must go through a long screening. First interviews are this fall with a second round next spring. The final class will be selected in summer 2021, according to the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After that, the candidates will go through two years of basic astronaut training. That includes spacewalks, robotics, leadership and teamwork drills. Then they are eligible for a spaceflight assignment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most recent soldier to complete the demanding training is Maj. Frank Rubio. He was selected as a candidate in 2017. Rubio is awaiting his flight assignment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Retired Army officers, such as Col. Pat Forrester, now serving as chief of NASA\u2019s astronaut office, look to the service\u2019s success in providing candidates to continue. (NASA)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDescribe those things to people who are not necessarily in the Army,\u201d she said. \u201cI know that most Soldiers have the skills that we\u2019re looking for and I just really encourage them to communicate that on their resume.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a highly selective and competitive program. McClain applied twice before being accepted. Another classmate applied four times before making it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But despite the challenges, she said, it\u2019s all been worth it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou step back and look down \u2026 and see your own feet dangling with the entire Earth behind it,\u201d she said. \u201cIt was just a really magical
