{"id":33918,"date":"2015-11-02T16:34:32","date_gmt":"2015-11-02T16:34:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2015\/11\/02\/intel-program-can-prep-soldiers-for-post-service-career\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T02:35:20","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T02:35:20","slug":"intel-program-can-prep-soldiers-for-post-service-career","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2015\/11\/02\/intel-program-can-prep-soldiers-for-post-service-career\/","title":{"rendered":"Intel program can prep soldiers for post-service career"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">goes w\/lengthy qualifications box<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the Army\u2019s low-profile but high-impact intelligence agencies is scouting current and former officers, warrant officers and NCOs for two <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">very <\/span>special career programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same organization also has non<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">&#8211;<\/span>career\u00a0broadening opportunities for noncommissioned officers <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">NCOs <\/span>who would like to serve overseas as <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">an <\/span>enlisted defense attaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These special jobs are managed by the Army Field Support Agency, a major subordinate command of Army Intelligence and Security Command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Our job really is to find the right people and put them in the right place so they can work the right mission,&#8221; AFSC commander Col. Eric Zimmerman\u00a0said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Based at Fort Meade, Maryland, the AFSC serves as the force provider for the Army&#8217;s only career intelligence programs, as well as the Army element of the Defense Attach\u00e9 Service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Great Skill<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">s<\/span> Program, Military Intelligence Civilian Excepted Career Program and Army Attach\u00e9 Program &#8220;<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> &#8220;We have vital programs \u2013 the Great Skills Program, the Military Intelligence Civilian Excepted Career Program and the Army Attach\u00e9 program.\u00a0&#8220;These programs <\/span>provide military and career civilian intelligence professionals with opportunities to serve in missions and locations largely unknown to the rest of the Army,&#8221; Zimmerman said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first two programs are unique in that they are designed to provide a continuum of service that begins with the training, professional development and operational employment of officers and NCOs to sensitive, nearly always classified, operational missions in support of Army and joint forces. Here, Edgardo Ortiz, right, a Military Intelligence Civilian Excepted Career Program agent with 470th Military Intelligence Brigade, speaks with a Haitian at an open-air market after deploying to Port-au-Prince after the 2010 earthquake.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span>Photo Credit: CW2 Katrina Adams\/Army<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We have the capability to provide a soldier with training, professional development and operationally focused assignments throughout their military career, and if they choose, to continue that pattern in the civilian career program,&#8221; Zimmerman said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because of the classified nature of the missions to which AFSC personnel are assigned, center officials could not address questions regarding specific missions and duties, past or present, or the organizations which they support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Particular sets of skills<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the Great Skill<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">s<\/span> Program <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">certainly <\/span>needs qualified military intelligence soldiers, AFSC also is interested in accessing soldiers from other career fields who may have skill sets and unique talents needed for specialized intelligence operations, according to Sgt. Maj. Ayman Gomaa, the support center sergeant major.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"rte rte-comment\">&#8220;The Army will train these soldiers as needed,&#8221; said the sergeant major.<\/span>&#8220;With a lot of troops coming back from deployment, they are asking themselves, \u2018What\u2019s next for me?&#8217; &#8221; Gomaa said.\u00a0&#8220;One thing we want to highlight is that we are a 24\/7 operation, and if a war is not going on, we still have a mission, and will continue to have a mission into the future (for those who join our team),&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AFSC primarily is looking for Regular Army, active-component soldiers, but has recruited reservists who have unique skill sets and who agree to transition to the active component. Such moves &#8220;<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">However, &#8220;these <\/span>are very limited, and done only on a case-by-case basis,&#8221; Gomaa said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Training will be done on an as-needed basis, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We recruit talent, we don\u2019t recruit resum\u00e9s,&#8221; said a Great Skill Program\u00a0recruiting official who asked that his name not be used for security reasons.\u00a0&#8220;We are looking for the right soldier who has the commitment to serving in these sensitive positions and who has the character to conduct these high-impact missions, and to succeed in the training environment and in the operations that we conduct worldwide.<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">\u00a0said the official.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We will provide the competence to that soldier, whether they are an NCO, warrant officer or officer.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"rte rte-comment\">&#8220;We are going to get them the training they need, and we\u2019re going to ensure they are successful out in the field.&#8221;<\/span>The Great Skill professional development regimen includes language training and advanced civilian education, as needed, as well as the regular professional military education courses required of all Army officers, warrant officers and NCOs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Depending on the mission, we will give our soldiers whatever is required to be successful,&#8221; the <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">Great Skills <\/span>official said, adding that NCOs who enter the program\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">.The same official also said NCOs who are accepted into the program, and who are so inclined, <\/span>have opportunities to become warrant officers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are no grade ceilings for soldiers<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> assigned to the Great Skills program<\/span>, with NCOs being able to reach sergeant major, warrant officers eligible to make CW5 and commissioned officers able to become\u00a0colonels. The unnamed official said the program had many long-serving members who&#8217;d reached those ranks, and the training participants receive, Gomaa said, &#8220;makes them very competitive for promotion.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We have many colonels, CW5s and sergeants major who have spent a long time in the program, and who have come up through the ranks,&#8221; said the official.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The training we give these soldiers makes them very competitive for promotion,&#8221; according to Gomaa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Becoming an attach\u00e9<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Enlisted Attach\u00e9 Program is not a career endeavor, \u00a0but rather a broadening assignment that involves some training\u00a0and the award of Skill Qualification Identifier 7, which is well-respected by promotion boards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Soldiers accepted for this program acquire a skill set not available anywhere else in the Army, and that makes them very competitive for promotion,&#8221; said Master Sgt. Britt Skaggs, a personnel manager with the Attach\u00e9 Management Division of AFSC, which also has requirements for warrant officers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2852\" height=\"2852\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635803519283660432-afsclogojpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-67575\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635803519283660432-afsclogojpg.jpg 2852w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635803519283660432-afsclogojpg.jpg?resize=150,150 150w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635803519283660432-afsclogojpg.jpg?resize=300,300 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635803519283660432-afsclogojpg.jpg?resize=768,768 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635803519283660432-afsclogojpg.jpg?resize=1024,1024 1024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635803519283660432-afsclogojpg.jpg?resize=1536,1536 1536w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635803519283660432-afsclogojpg.jpg?resize=2048,2048 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2852px) 100vw, 2852px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span>The logo for Army Field Support Command, which runs two career-track programs seeking soldiers with clean backgrounds and a desire to work on secret missions.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span>Photo Credit: Army<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Skaggs said 10 staff sergeants with attache experience are on the new sergeant first class list, while four SFCs were selected for advancement to master sergeant earlier this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Soldiers in the ranks of sergeant through master sergeant who are selected for attach\u00e9 duty will serve in the Defense Attach\u00e9 Office of U.S. embassies worldwide.\u00a0The DAO staff represents the Defense Department to the host-nation government and military, and assists and advises the U.S. ambassador on military matters, among other duties.<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">and coordinates other political\/military actions within the embassy\u2019s area of accreditation.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Skaggs said the Army has a mix of accompanied and unaccompanied enlisted attach\u00e9 tours that range from 12 months to three years.\u00a0Before their overseas tour, soldiers will attend the Joint Military\u00a0Attach\u00e9 School in Washington, D.C.,\u00a0and, if required, language school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Upon completion of their tours, many of these soldiers will have follow-on assignments to Army units that are regionally aligned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>HOW TO APPLY<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Application requirements for\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">the\u00a0<\/span>Army Field Support Center programs are rigorous and focus on officers and NCOs with an outstanding record of service who have unique skills, experience and potential<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">, as follows<\/span>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Great Skill Program<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A career military program that identifies, selects, trains, assigns and retains officers and NCOs who conduct sensitive and complex classified operations for the Army, Defense Department, joint forces and national agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Applicants will undergo a rigorous mental screening, assessment and selection process.\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">In addition, t<\/span>They must have a record of strict adherence to Army values and should exhibit excellent interpersonal skills, written and oral communication proficiency, initiative and leadership, flexibility and adaptability, critical thinking and research abilities, and\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">have\u00a0<\/span>a strong personal work ethic. Specific requirements include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Active-component soldier, at least 25 years old, holding or can be processed for\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">pplicants must be an active component soldier, 25 years or older, who holds, or who can be processed for,\u00a0<\/span>a top secret security clearance with access to sensitive compartmented information\u00a0and\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">who\u00a0<\/span>has passed, or is willing to take, a counterintelligence polygraph.<\/li><li>M<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">Applicants must have a m<\/span>inimum score of 2\/2 on the Defense Language Proficiency Test, or 95 on the Defense Language Aptitude Battery.<\/li><li>If married, spouse\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">an applicant\u2019s spouse\u00a0<\/span>must be a U.S. citizen or be willing to apply for citizenship.<\/li><li>No\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">Applicants should not have\u00a0<\/span>unsecured debt of more than $15,000.<\/li><li>At least\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">Applicants must have at least\u00a0<\/span>five years\u2019 time in service.<\/li><li>A<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">, and be a<\/span>pproved for release by their career branch.<\/li><li>For enlisted, be\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">\u2022 Enlisted soldiers must be\u00a0<\/span>in the rank of sergeant or higher, and be eligible to become a warrant officer (have a GT of 110 or higher and be a graduate of the Advanced Leader Course).<\/li><li>For officers,\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">\u2022 Officers must\u00a0<\/span>have completed a key developmental assignment for their current rank and specialty as defined in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.apd.army.mil\/pdffiles\/p600_3.pdf\">DA\u00a0PAM 600-3<\/a>, Commissioned Officer Professional Development and Career Management.<\/li><li>For counterintelligence track applicants, hold\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">Applicants for the counterintelligence career track should hold\u00a0<\/span>enlisted MOS 35L, warrant MOS 351L or commissioned officer AOC 35E\u00a0and have
