The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2017\/08\/16\/there-are-10-posts-named-after-confederates-should-the-army-re-name-them\/\" target=_blank>Army has 10 military installations<\/a> named after Confederate generals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Military.com first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.military.com\/daily-news\/2020\/06\/09\/army-latest-service-consider-confederate-flag-ban.html\" target=_blank>reported<\/a> that Army leaders were reviewing the Marine Corps\u2019 policy banning Confederate flags and considering a similar move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps instituted an official <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/06\/06\/marine-corps-bars-public-display-of-confederate-flag-on-installations\/\" target=_blank>policy banning Confederate flags<\/a> on Friday after originally raising the issue in February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy followed suit on Tuesday, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2020\/06\/09\/cno-says-no-more-confederate-battle-flags-in-public-spaces-and-work-areas\/\" target=_blank>Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Gilday<\/a> directed his staff to draft an order that will ban the Confederate battle flag from all public spaces and work areas on Navy bases, ships, subs and aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Early this week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/06\/08\/key-debate-on-military-protest-response-budget-priorities-set-to-happen-behind-closed-doors-on-capitol-hill\/\">Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy<\/a> and Defense Secretary Mark Esper said through their spokespeople that they were open to possibly renaming the service\u2019s installations currently named after Confederate leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe secretary of defense and secretary of the Army are open to a bi-partisan discussion on the topic,\u201d said Col. Sunset R. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., was one notable voice calling for each military service to prohibit the display of Confederate flags.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Army should demonstrate moral leadership in acting swiftly to prohibit the public display of the Confederate Battle Flag, rather than waiting on Congress to force such action,\u201d Duckworth wrote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.duckworth.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/20.06.08%20-%20Senator%20Duckworth%20Letter%20to%20U.S.%20Army%20-%20Prohibit%20Display%20of%20Confederate%20Battle%20Flag.pdf\" target=_blank>letter<\/a> Monday to the Army secretary and chief of staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An official for Duckworth\u2019s office said on background that while her letter focused primarily on the display of Confederate flags, the \u201cprecise ask is a bit broader.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The official pointed Army times to a section of Duckworth\u2019s letter where she asked that Army leaders \u201celiminate any honors that could reasonably be interpreted as commemorating or celebrating any enemy force, foreign or domestic, that engaged in armed conflict against the U.S. Armed Forces.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other U.S. military departments don\u2019t have similar installations named after Confederate leaders, as the Army does, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/fas.org\/sgp\/crs\/misc\/R44959.pdf\">Congressional Research Service<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the Navy did name one of its warships, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2017\/08\/15\/meet-the-navy-ships-named-in-honor-of-the-confederacy\/\">Chancellorsville<\/a>, after a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.public.navy.mil\/surfor\/cg62\/Pages\/namesake.aspx\">Confederate victory<\/a> during the Civil War. It is believed to be the sole Navy ship on active duty named in honor of the Confederacy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2020\/06\/09\/cno-says-no-more-confederate-battle-flags-in-public-spaces-and-work-areas\/\" target=_blank>according<\/a> to Navy Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Navy spokesperson declined to comment to Navy Times as to whether the sea service planned to change the vessel\u2019s name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army\u2019s own openness to potentially renaming installations is an apparent reversal from earlier this year, when service officials told Army Times in February that there were \u201cno plans to rename any street or installation, including those named for Confederate generals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those officials said in a statement at the time that the naming of those sites was \u201cdone in a spirit of reconciliation, not to demonstrate support for any particular cause or ideology.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\"
