Glad I could help!&#8221; the president wrote<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/07\/02\/seal-war-crimes-suspect-not-guilty-on-murder-charge\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP19133769892683.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">SEAL war crimes suspect not guilty on murder charge<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Special Warfare Operator Chief Edward \u201cEddie\u201d Gallagher found guilty for inappropriate photo with a corpse, not murder or other alleged crimes.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The outcome dealt a major blow to one of the Navy\u2019s most high-profile war crimes cases and exposed a generational conflict within the ranks of the elite special operations forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gallagher could face up to four months imprisonment for the single conviction along with a reduction in rank, forfeiture of two-thirds of his pay and a reprimand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having already served seven months in confinement ahead of the trial, the highly decorated Gallagher is expected to go home a free man, his defense lawyers said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the military justice system, the jury decides the sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the verdict was read, the defense attorneys jumped up from their seats as Gallagher turned and embraced his wife over the bar of the gallery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asked in an interview Wednesday on Fox &amp; Friends what his message might be to future Navy SEALs, Gallagher said he would tell them that &#8220;loyalty is a trait that seems to be lost. &#8230; You&#8217;re there to watch your brother&#8217;s back, and he&#8217;s there to watch your back.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/04\/22\/what-motivated-fellow-seals-to-dime-out-eddie-gallagher\/\" target=_blank>Speaking of his accusers<\/a>, Gallagher said \u201cthis small group of SEALs that decided to concoct this story in no way, shape or form represent the community that I love.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gallagher also thanked Fox News &#8220;for being behind us from day one,&#8221; and also thanked Trump along with Republican Reps. Matthew D. They said there was no physical evidence to support the allegations because no corpse was ever recovered and examined by a pathologist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The prosecution said Gallagher was incriminated by his own text messages and photos, including one of him holding the dead militant up by the hair and clutching a knife in his other hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Got him with my hunting knife,&#8221; Gallagher wrote in a text with the photo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The defense said it was just gallows humor and pointed out that almost all platoon members who testified against him also posed with the corpse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gallagher&#8217;s family championed a &#8220;Free Eddie&#8221; campaign that won the support of dozens of congressional Republicans who brought the case to Trump&#8217;s attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump had Gallagher moved from the brig to more favorable confinement at a Navy hospital this spring and was reportedly considering a pardon for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/06\/16\/with-a-new-team-of-prosecutors-the-navy-takes-a-final-shot-at-seal-eddie-gallagher\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GallagherSNIPER.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">With a new team of prosecutors, the Navy takes a final shot at SEAL Eddie Gallagher<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Jury selection begins in the war crimes case on Monday, with a trial expected to kick off two days later.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The panel of five Marines and two sailors, including a SEAL, were mostly seasoned combat veterans who served in Iraq and several had lost friends in war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of the witnesses were granted immunity to protect them from being prosecuted for acts they described on the stand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lt. Jacob Portier, the officer in charge of the platoon, has been charged separately for overseeing Gallagher&#8217;s re-enlistment ceremony next to the corpse and not reporting the alleged stabbing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy is still pursuing the case against Portier, defense lawyer Jeremiah J.
