Andrew Gomez was headed back to Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhile driving, I noticed smoke billowing from the woods and a car fire beginning on I-295,\u201d the Marine reservist and aviation supply specialist with Marine Aircraft Group 49 said in a release announcing the award. \u201cI saw no visible first responders on scene and felt a calling to pull over and render aid.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2024\/06\/17\/marine-captains-honored-for-saving-a-mans-life-in-the-dallas-airport\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/15th-MEU-lifesaving.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Marine captains honored for saving a man\u2019s life in the Dallas airport<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The two pilots each received the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vehicle had veered off the highway and crashed through thick brush before colliding with a tree, according to the Marine Corps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gomez assessed the chaotic scene and found a driver who appeared to have severe neck injuries, and a woman lying on the ground next to the vehicle, apparently unable to move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI ran towards her, picked her up, and another bystander began to help me,\u201d Gomez said. \u201cHer injuries were severe, but she didn\u2019t seem in immediate risk of dying before first responders arrived.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After moving her safely away from the burning car, Gomez returned to check on the driver. The driver was unresponsive and did not survive the crash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First responders soon arrived and took over, extinguishing the flames and securing the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gomez credited the Marine Corps with his lifesaving skills but recognized another person for helping him react the way he did in those precarious moments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhile I don\u2019t see myself as a hero, I am happy to have been that for someone on what was probably the worst day of their life,\u201d Gomez said. \u201cMy mom taught me that life isn\u2019t about us. (U.S. Air Force)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the incident, the surviving woman and her family have thanked Gomez and invited him to attend family cookouts and a birthday, according to Marines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The surviving passenger\u2019s name was not included in the official release due to privacy concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat Andrew did for me was more than heroic,\u201d the rescued passenger said. \u201cI\u2019m beyond grateful for his actions on my behalf that night in the woods off I-295. Without him, I most likely would not be here right now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maj. Gen. John Kelliher III, 4th Marine Aircraft Wing commanding general, called Gomez\u2019s actions a \u201cremarkable act of bravery\u201d in the release announcing the award. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe valiant actions displayed by Sgt. Gomez unquestionably merits one of our highest honors, demonstrating that Marines and others like him can be called upon to respond in times of crisis,\u201d Kelliher said. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sgt.
