This effort is a new approach to handling viruses, finding ways to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2021\/06\/18\/cnp-covid-vaccines-likely-to-become-mandatory-soon\/\" target=\"_blank\">defeat families of viruses<\/a> rather than a specific strain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that\u2019s important because medical experts worry that the next <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/06\/17\/troops-who-refused-anthrax-vaccine-paid-a-high-price\/\" target=\"_blank\">pandemic-triggering<\/a> virus could be more contagious than COVID-19 and far deadlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe know it\u2019s safe and tolerable but we don\u2019t know yet the immunity it confers,\u201d said Dr. Kayvon Modjarrad, director of the emerging infectious diseases branch at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. He spoke during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defenseone.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Defense One 2021 Tech Summit<\/a> on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2021\/06\/17\/the-shadow-of-anthrax-the-voluntary-covid-19-vaccination-effort-owes-much-to-past-failures\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/colin-powell_web.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The shadow of anthrax: The voluntary COVID-19 vaccination effort owes much to past failures<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The voluntary COVID-19 vaccine effort stands in stark contrast to the Pentagon\u2019s mandatory Anthrax Vaccine Immunization Program, which began in 1998. Those who refused often faced harsh penalties.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Modjarrad said that the results so far in animal studies have shown high immunity. If even a fraction of that is present in humans, their current vaccine would be a good option for a next-generation vaccine to combat coronavirus, regardless of the strain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their broad-spectrum coronavirus vaccine could also serve as a \u201cbooster\u201d shot for soldiers that would offer longer and more durable protection against future variants, Modjarrad said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The push is an effort to produce robust vaccines that target a family of viruses, rather than past efforts which pursued specific immunization against certain strains. Dental care providers and staff were included as part of the initial distribution since performing dental procedures puts them at high risk for exposure to COVID-19<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re chasing the wrong curve of the virus after it emerges,\u201d Modjarrad said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is to have a vaccinated population before a virus can make an impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ll get to the point where we can stop the virus in its tracks before a pandemic,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There have been at least six \u201cnotable variants\u201d of the coronavirus detected so far in the United States since the pandemic first arrived in early 2020, according to the Centers for Disease Control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Modjarrad spoke along with Dr. Dimitra Stratis-Cullum, program manager for transformational synthetic-biology for military environments with the Army\u2019s Combat Capabilities Development Command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stratis-Cullum\u2019s work focuses on making synthetic materials that can be used for a host of applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her work over the past year has focused on making medical diagnostic items, but also jumped very early into building methods for testing plasma of convalescent COVID-19 patients that could be used to help others recover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through CCDC and ARL, her team continues to build an \u201cimmunity library\u201d so that first responders can quickly screen any type of disease they encounter and be prepared with the right kind of tools and approaches when they arrive at a location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stratis-Cullum\u2019s group is partnered with Modjarrad\u2019s team in finding where and how the coronavirus \u201cbinds\u201d to a receptor in the body. By developing synthetic methods to prevent the binding in the first place, they hope to keep the virus at bay even if it enters the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the ways in which Modjarrad\u2019s group has approached the problem is to use a nanoparticle vaccine that uses ferritin, which has been effective against the current COVID-19 virus and another coronavirus from 2003, the SARS-CoV-1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ferratin iron-carrying protein somewhat resembles a sphere like a soccer ball, Modjarrad said. The structure has 24 faces on its exterior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scientists can place any type of virus particle they want the human body to recognize on those faces. Then the immune system reacts to it because it resembles the actual virus that the system will face if exposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And, by having so many options, researchers can target specific structures in the virus they\u2019re studying to be carried by the nanoparticle to the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They can mix and match parts that are core to the coronavirus and will be part of any strain that could emerge, he said. The body then has had a chance to identify from the vaccine what it needs to defeat any future virus it might encounter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The vaccine could provide
