{"id":36715,"date":"2021-01-28T21:03:52","date_gmt":"2021-01-28T21:03:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2021\/01\/28\/fda-approves-army-developed-battlefield-tbi-blood-test\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T03:06:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T03:06:09","slug":"fda-approves-army-developed-battlefield-tbi-blood-test","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2021\/01\/28\/fda-approves-army-developed-battlefield-tbi-blood-test\/","title":{"rendered":"FDA approves Army-developed battlefield TBI blood test"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army recently gained approval for a rapid blood test for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/opinion\/commentary\/2020\/02\/01\/debate-over-brain-injuries-in-us-military-a-teachable-moment\/\" target=_blank>traumatic brain injury<\/a> that can be used on the battlefield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For at least the past decade researchers have been seeking a way to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2017\/10\/29\/the-army-is-buying-a-device-that-can-quickly-assess-traumatic-brain-injury-on-the-battlefield\/\" target=_blank>quickly detect and diagnose TBI<\/a>, according to an Army statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA rapid test for TBI is a critical addition to our downrange capability to care for the brain health of our most important weapon system, the warfighter, and help maintain a high state of readiness across the Force,\u201d said Army Brig. Gen. Michael J. Talley, commanding general for the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command and Fort Detrick, Maryland.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2020\/02\/10\/more-than-100-us-troops-diagnosed-with-tbi-after-irans-attack-at-al-asad-report\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP20013453933262.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">109 US troops diagnosed with TBI after Iran missile barrage says Pentagon in latest update<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The number reflects a more than 50 percent increase from Pentagon\u2019s previous injury assessment, Reuters reports.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Food and Drug Administration cleared the test for use last week, according to the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From 2000 to 2019, more than 400,000 troops sustained a TBI from combat injuries, training accidents and sporting events, according to the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The test, known as the Abbott i-STAT Alinity TBI plasma assay, identifies two brain-specific protein markers that appear following a TBI incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That gives medics, nurses and doctors clear evidence of the condition rather than relying on subjective descriptions. likely to impact the efficiency of TBI management, Caudle said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOver the years, the program progressed through basic science studies at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research and USAMRDC\u2019s Combat Casualty Care Research Program, then into product development and clinical trials in USAMMDA, and ultimately U.S. FDA clearance,\u201d said
