{"id":37239,"date":"2020-03-03T20:28:36","date_gmt":"2020-03-03T20:28:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/03\/03\/trump-calls-taliban-discusses-peace-talks\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T02:50:18","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T02:50:18","slug":"trump-calls-taliban-discusses-peace-talks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/flashpoints\/2020\/03\/03\/trump-calls-taliban-discusses-peace-talks\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump calls Taliban, discusses peace talks"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Donald Trump held a phone call with the Taliban and discussed violence across <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2020\/02\/29\/all-us-troops-to-leave-afghanistan-in-14-months-if-taliban-meets-commitments-of-peace-deal-signed-today\/\" target=_blank>Afghanistan<\/a> with the militant group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump confirmed that while on the South Lawn of the White House Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2020\/01\/23\/survey-nearly-half-of-afghans-want-us-troops-out-after-taliban-peace-deal\/\" target=_blank>Taliban<\/a> claimed Tuesday that Trump called the militant group\u2019s lead negotiator to discuss the Feb. 29 agreement signed by the two combative foes and upcoming intra-Afghan talks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe had a good conversation. We\u2019ve agreed there is no violence. We don\u2019t want violence. But we\u2019ll see what happens. They are dealing with Afghanistan. We had a very good talk with the leader of the Taliban,\u201d Trump said on the South Lawn of the White House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Military Times has reached out to the White House for a statement and readout of the historic call and has yet to receive a response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Muhammad Suhail Shaheen, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2020\/03\/01\/lets-go-home-afghan-war-vets-torn-on-us-taliban-deal\/\" target=_blank>Taliban<\/a> spokesman, tweeted Tuesday that the call between the Taliban\u2019s lead negotiator Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar and Trump lasted roughly five minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Taliban claim Trump discussed America\u2019s 19-year presence in Afghanistan and the pending withdrawal of foreign forces. Esper explained Monday that the U.S. will assess whether the Taliban has lived up to its end of the agreement once American forces drawdown to 8,600 troops over the next several months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. could pause or delay the withdrawal of American troops if it believes the Taliban are not living up to their commitments in the agreement, Esper explained Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fragile agreement between the Taliban and U.S. is already showing signs of cracks. On Monday, the Taliban resumed attacks against Afghan government forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Taliban claim military operations against Afghan security forces does not violate the agreement signed with the U.S., but American officials have expressed that they expect Taliban forces to continue to reduce violence across the Afghanistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Taliban were able to significantly reduce attacks across Afghanistan over a seven-day period, demonstrating the militant group\u2019s ability to control its fighters on the battlefield. The reduction in violence led the U.S. to sign the bilateral agreement with the Taliban on Feb. 29.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Esper told reporters Monday that there is an expectation that the reduction in violence would continue and then \u201ctaper off\u201d with the signing of the deal, but ultimately intra-Afghan talks will lead to a cease-fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe will take this one day at a time,\u201d Esper said. Pay less attention to statements, pay less attention to things people say. Watch what happens on the ground. There\u2019s been a lot of work done at detailed levels about how this will proceed,\u201d Pompeo told Baier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the U.S. agreement with the Taliban, American warplanes continue to pound ISIS fighters in Kunar Province, Afghanistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Col.
