{"id":37834,"date":"2017-02-27T20:16:56","date_gmt":"2017-02-27T20:16:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2017\/02\/27\/army-paratroopers-train-in-alaska-s-arctic-conditions\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T03:13:55","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T03:13:55","slug":"army-paratroopers-train-in-alaska-s-arctic-conditions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2017\/02\/27\/army-paratroopers-train-in-alaska-s-arctic-conditions\/","title":{"rendered":"Army paratroopers train in Alaska&#8217;s Arctic conditions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was 60 degrees below zero with wind chill on the ramp of the C-130, but that was not going to stop the Army&#8217;s paratroopers from jumping out over Deadhorse, Alaska.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Wednesday, 150 paratroopers from U.S. Army Alaska&#8217;s 1st Squadron, 40th Cavalry Regiment participated in Spartan Pegasus \u2014 the exercise&#8217;s third iteration, but the second time for this squadron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spartan Pegasus \u2014 the largest U.S. airborne operation north of the Arctic Circle in more than a decade \u2014 trains soldiers on how to move and operate across frozen terrain and demonstrates the Army&#8217;s ability to operate in such extreme conditions. Air Force C-130s and C-17s from Hawaii and Arkansas, and CH-47 Chinooks and Strykers from Fort Wainwright, Alaska, also were involved in the exercise. <br\/> <br\/><\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-smg-jwplayer-video\"><atype-video-jwplayer nostick=\"true\" playlisturl=\"https:\/\/cdn.jwplayer.com\/v2\/playlists\/fCzRqMW8?tags=68d49f18-bbe9-47f7-a4b3-9de81c2a46e0\" aspectratio=\"16 \/ 9\" mute autostart=\"false\"><\/atype-video-jwplayer><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The soldiers from U.S. Army Alaska\u2019s 1st Squadron (Airborne), 40th Cavalry Regiment trained in the Arctic elements.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>The paratroopers from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage were tasked with retrieving a crashed satellite as the exercise&#8217;s objective. The soldiers moved out in Small Unit Sustainment Vehicles and the Chinooks, while those on skis moved toward the satellite. Maj. Evan Lewandowski described the conditions as 100 below with wind chill over the ramp of the C-130s and C-17s. Troops must make sure very little skin is exposed in such extreme elements.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span>Photo Credit: David Vergun<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>The soldiers had to adjust to some changes in the plan. <br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Batteries die faster in such a cold environment, causing issues with radio operations and communications and delays. <br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The original plan was delayed a bit because of the change in wind speed,&#8221; Diven said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lewandowski said quick changes are typical of airborne operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Outside factors will always contribute to operations on the ground,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It&#8217;s kind of what separates an airborne unit from the rest of the Army.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/> <i>Charlsy Panzino covers the Guard and Reserve, training, technology, operations and features for Army Times and Air Force Times.
