{"id":37894,"date":"2018-11-14T22:34:38","date_gmt":"2018-11-14T22:34:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/11\/14\/a-female-soldier-has-made-it-through-the-armys-special-forces-selection\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T03:15:42","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T03:15:42","slug":"a-female-soldier-has-made-it-through-the-armys-special-forces-selection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2018\/11\/14\/a-female-soldier-has-made-it-through-the-armys-special-forces-selection\/","title":{"rendered":"A female soldier has made it through the Army\u2019s Special Forces selection"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the first time since the Army opened its<a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/09\/21\/former-special-forces-medic-to-receive-medal-of-honor-for-valor-in-afghanistan\/\" target=\"_blank\"> special operations<\/a> jobs to women in 2016, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/10\/09\/almost-800-women-are-serving-in-previously-closed-army-combat-jobs-this-is-how-theyre-faring\/\" target=\"_blank\">a female soldier<\/a> has completed the initial Special Forces Assessment and Selection process, a spokesman for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/off-duty\/military-culture\/2018\/10\/05\/green-beret-killed-6-insurgents-and-saved-two-of-his-men-despite-being-shot-twice-and-fragged\/\" target=\"_blank\">Army Special Operations Command<\/a> has confirmed to Army Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several women have attempted the 24-day program, part of the Special Forces Qualification Course, since then, but none have made it to the next round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRecently, a female successfully completed Special Forces Assessment and Selection and was selected to attend the Special Forces Qualification Course,&#8221; Lt. Col. Loren Bymer told Army Times. \u201dWe\u2019re proud of all the candidates who attended and were selected to continue into the qualification course in hopes of earning their Green Beret.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">USASOC declined to provide the soldier\u2019s rank or her current military occupational specialty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is our policy to not release the names of our service members because Special Forces soldiers perform discreet missions upon graduation,\u201d Bymer said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In general, Special Forces candidates take a break from training after SFAS before moving on to the next step of the Q course. Since the combat exemption lifted, hundreds of women have joined the infantry community, several have been assigned to the 75th Ranger Regiment, and more than a dozen have earned the Ranger
